An update: I used Tomtom all week in Auckland on my iPhone going all over the place and it never let me down. The lane pictures were really useful; actually the whole thing was. It even reported a speed camera (we weren't speeding). Fantastic. The only hiccup was it always got confused for a few minutes at spaghetti junction but that didn't matter that much. Never tried any other gps so can't really compare to any but I was really happy with Tomtom.
