Wow it really was only to announce The Beatles on iTunes.

That is pathetic.

ALTRON: Beatles on itunes. So what.

This is an epic announcement though. The Beatles licence holder was holding (no pun intended) the release of their titles into electronic media. It took Apple years of talking to get to this point.

The Beatles are still one of the top selling bands in the world. This deal marks the last barrier to fall before the entire industry adopts electronic delivery as the new official medium.

From here we will see changes in the way copyright laws are written, the cost of online distribution of music, infrastructure, ISP capacity planning, etc. Everything changes now.

i still think its marketing BS, a day we will never forget, because of the big let down.

i was hoping for something like a zune pass, where you pay a monthly subscription for music.  something worthy of the marketing.

OMGOMGOMG THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER SINCE - oh, ok, whatever. Well, that's nice. Too bad I already have all the Beatles music I want in non-lossy format via ripped CDs.

No. It's not. It's epic to Apple, but they pitched to consumers "a day you won't forget." To consumers, this is just some really old records being added to iTunes, and it will not be remembered. I totally get Apple's excitement and that it's a big deal to the industry, but they probably shouldn't have tried to build fever pitch over this as there's a certain level of expectation at Apple's "announcements" that wasn't met with this.

<yawns> The Apple which cried wolf - it may be a historic day for music execs and music law writers, but for the average joe on the street - not so much.

Beatles on itunes???

What would you do without the itunes
Would you stand up and walk to the droid
Send your login and I’ll send you an app
(But you may need to enter a key)
Oh I can buy a little help from itunes
Yes I can buy a little app from itunes
Lets all buy more apps from itunes

You just need a Steve Jobby
If you login he’ll send you some love
It can’t be any Jobby
Cause Steveo’s the Jobby to love

I think it is a big day, not for individuals, but for media/entertainment industry as a whole.

Now that the Beatles go electronic, watch as the rest of the non believers of electronic distribution change their minds and transform the way they reach people of a very large scale.

This is a turning point as people start to believe!

No.

But most consumers aren't the type of people that would post on Geekzone, or over analyse the delivery method of their media.  A fair chunk wouldn't even have a computer and are accessing iTunes directly via their iDevice.  So you can't really use "consumers" in the context you've chosen because you can only speak for yourself, or at least for the type of consumer that you are - i.e. a Geekzone consumer :)

For a lot of people this is a huge deal, people like my father in law who is a Beatles fanatic, but also not a great user of computers.  So he has all their catalogue on vinyl but not in a digital format.  This is a legitimate way for him to get that music again in a format that he can use without needing to break out the turntable.  Sure he could rip CD's, but again - not every consumer would do that or even know how to do it, or even know iTunes can do it for them.

Apple has a habit of appealing to the general consumer when it comes to iTunes - not the techy geek.  We're talking top-40 consumers here....I mean look at the ITMS front page - every day it's generic pop music that is at the forefront.

So while this might not be the epic announcement that a Geekzone consumer might want, that's not to say it's not epic and memorable for the general consumer.
