Fair point blakamin, but having said that the same applies to the others in the thread?

Based upon those two google descriptions, I dont see myself as an iphone fanboi. Ive had smartphones, I have mates with Androids, and with the many reasons why anyone gets any smart device, I prefer the iphone, but I also see the equivalent Androids as good devices also. Perhaps what may show me as a fanboi is that what does bug me is the locked down comments that many make. While I cannot go to a myriad of appsites as Android users can, the number of apps are many, 380,000 at last count, and many are free, or cheap as chips. Yes, I also found iTunes complex but I now how to do what I wnat it to do, and it suits me perfectly now.

Lets just say I like me iphone!! :-D

I agree with what others are saying here - The LG Optimus 2X from 2* is a really good choice if you are either wanting Voda or 2* or the i9000T from Telecom. I have the i9000T and find it a awesome device, I also have a Windows Phone too and find it's a bit behind in the app side of things (Mango /may/ change that though) - Stick to Android and live the high life with not buying a overpriced phone.

Personally, I must admit iPhone's look nice, they work well, but you pay a premium for it plus everyone has them. They are easy to learn but the thing with it is that you are for starters stuck with iTunes and also the next iPhone is coming out soon. That 2* LG Optimus is very good on price plus also has a dual core CPU in it (meaning twice the power in 1 chip) - It will do everything you need + more.

Also @billgates - Just wanted to point something out here:

Based on that post + your username & your signature, how many people on this forum would take you seriously? We all know you like Microsoft, and I know for a fact you won't admit anything else is better, but keep bias responses to yourself since Windows Phone in this case may not actually be the right option here...

Actually, Windows Phone is quite a good smarphone if you want something that is easy to use, has some deep social network integration (out of the box with Facebook, soon with Twitter). Not so great for map navigation (maps is ok though).

I recommended the LG 2x because of 2degrees in the mix, but would have no problem recommending a Windows Phone for a novice smartphone user.

From what I've seen when iPhone owners try the GPS in offline or airplane mode it wouldn't work, perhaps they were doing something wrong.

Out of the box I understand the iPhone requires a data connection to download the maps as you progress along your route, hence the comment about the GPS maps not working outside of cell coverage. Is my understanding wrong?

My reference to third party apps was to apps from other vendors like handandgo etc.

Unlike you, some people find mass storage is really useful e.g. When your'e away from home and want to have a look at a photo on a bigger screen or work on document that you have saved on your phone, you just hook up the usb cord and away you go without the need for special software on that computer.

Having used a PDA for for over 10 years and now using my phone as my PDA I guess I have a different focus on what functions I place importance on to a lot of smart phone owners

As I said in an earlier post, horses for courses, decide what you want/need and select accordingly.

Have just read a garbled thing saying that the LG won't work so well in smaller cities/rural areas?

I don't care about he Telecom as will be 2deg but is this true for the rural as we are semi rural?

Very valid points. Maps in iOS is online only, I think it uses Google. I just downloaded Navfree that includes Aust and NZ maps, which resolves that for me. I knew what you meant by third party apps, and while its cool to have multi sites to go to, iOS has them all accessible in one place, which for me is good, others prefer multi sites which is also cool. The data access is true, and while that does not impact on me, it may for others, ironically I use a Classic for music not the iphone and that has 120Gb accessible.

I guess what I see on these threads is that while all of these devices are good, and there are Apple and Android fanbois, there seems to be a need to note the cons about an iPhone. Take iTunes, your "stuck" with iTunes. Well if I had an Android I would be trying to use iTunes or at least something similar, as one example. The Apple guys don't seem to have a need to list the cons of an Android, which I guess is my main point

are you planning to use this on 2degrees / vodafone / Telecom?

Telecom uses 2 WCDMA bands:
WCDMA 850 - throughout NZ
WCDMA 2100 - in main cities

Vodafone AND 2degrees use:
WCDMA 900 - throughout NZ
WCDMA 2100 - in main cities
(ignore 2G network and roaming to simplify things atm)

LG OPTIMUS 2X support WCDMA 900 and WCDMA 2100. so this phone will work very well on 2degrees or vodafone in the main cities and rural.

however, LG OPTIMUS 2X will NOT work well on TELECOM because the phone did NOT support WCDMA 850

That's true - I do have one myself too, except I just find the apps are very limited.

Spoken like an iphone user.... ;-)

But anyway:
If it's a smartphone you're after, wholly recommend the iPhone. My wife hates widgets in general but found the learning curve on iPhone quite good. The 'Find my iPhone' feature with iCloud is pretty good too - and for sheer breadth of apps, ease of use and so on... it's the best. Apps maketh this platform, and you are guarenteed to be able to find whatever you are looking for. the others... not so much...

Given a choice, and if the OS was actually any good, I would still choose Nokia. But the OS isn't anymore, and the phone choices are rubbish imho.

It all comes down to price though. Iphone IS very expensive, and you need extra's with it - I really recommend the Apple extended cover for when the widget gets dropped, and also the bumpers/screen guards/travel power supplies... you'll easily be on the wrong side of $1500 before you're done. Decent androids are in a similar pricepoint, but the apps and naffer and far too oriented to the tech fraternity.

I'm a pretty blatant Android fanboy, however if you are new to smartphones and not very confident with new technologies I would definitely recommend the iPhone. The only major downside is the steep pricing.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.
