Some NAS boxes include an iTunes Media Server - which I understand is music only.? Does remove the issue of a PC (and any login problems).?

I don't know how they cope with itunes home sharing - that's the pain of the ATV of course. XBMC on the other hand gets around this but you're stuck with the jailbreak issue.?

Neither.? That said I'd probably rather use XBMC or plex for music.? Or Keep iTunes on a server (which I kind of do now).

How do you set up your iTunes? Apple need some sort of family account (like 5 users max that can be associated to each other), something which shares all purchased items with everyone in the same home, but more seemless than whats on offer currently.

Use one account for buying - this is the account to use on home sharing.

All other devices can have differing itunes stores/icloud accounts - only use these for apps etc.

Then make sure each device uses the home sharing account and they'll be able to play the media from the central location.

Can be a bit fiddly, I have one home sharing account with a US itunes account attached to it, this is what I buy video with.  I have another itunes account (my primary icloud account) for apps and music - my wifes phone has the same itunes account for her apps and music.  Then she has her own icloud account for icloud syncing.  The apple tv, an itunes install and the two phones all use teh us account for home sharing.

Hmmm what about previous purchases? It's a shame you can't interlink accounts with home sharing and what ever account you are using each can access the content from the other.

scotteffone: IMO if this "Ability to re-download purchased movies through iCloud" means I can now buy movies on iTunes and download them from the cloud to watch them on demand that will be great. So annoyed with rental only. I think Apple might be getting somewhere with Apple TV!

Not sure if I fully understand your concerns, but you can currently purchase movies in iTunes on your Mac or PC, and stream these to the Apple TV. IOW, it is currently possible to watch movies other than rentals.?

It's the re-download bit I object to.? I'd prefer to buy the movie/tv episode and NOT download it - just stream directly off iCloud.

I tend to buy via iTunes, but want to play it on either my phone or Apple TV, currently I think it has to be downloaded as a physical file to do this.

Isn't this what it is saying though? My interpretation is that you can now stream purchased movies from iCloud.

Hope so.  Wonder how I'd test it.

This works fine and has done for a while (I have a US based iTunes account).  If you purchase on either your PC or the Apple TV, when you browse your purchased content  it has a cloud icon next to it (as opposed to connecting to your computer with iTunes and streaming from there).  THis works great and I have never had problems with it, even HD content works nice.

Only problem is paying for something in iTunes then seeing it free in Hulu ;-)

Happy to help - although I should clarify - when you BUY content on iTunes on your PC, you can stream than content from the cloud via the Apple TV.

When you RENT content on an Apple TV, it is only available on the Apple TV.  I have started to do this more for movies, rather than the traditional DVD/Blu-ray from the video store.  Netflix is a good substitute/bigger library for this, but iTunes HD content looks better than the Netflix ones.

So, for PURCHASED content it came come from either the cloud or streamed from iTunes on your LAN.

Note - I am saying this based on my US iTunes account, although AFAIK it is now the same for the NZ iTunes store (except the distinct lack of HD content in NZ, but that's a different topic).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Ah yeah, that's what I expected.
