dazaisme: In the process of doing this, I have done this before to no effect. I have tried restoring phone as a new phone as well with and without the sim card in it. If there was a jailbreak out I would cut my loses and hack the phone however no such luck. I am just confused as to why the two replacement phones that I have encountered aren't supported on the 2degrees network and yet every other iphone works on 2degrees with no problems.?

OK, so its the third phone so ask for a replacement under the CGA.

Why do you bring up the CGA when it's not even required?, Please go and read the CGA and understand it!

Clearly the phone is not being fixed, are you saying it is working?

Yes the phone works this has been proven and it's posted in this thread it work

When anyone posts anything about hardware you staight away bring up the CGA

I'm not denying that but ultimately there is an issue at hand and the guy wants it solved. I have helped as much as I can at this point and am basically saying take it back.

For me the issue is the phone is not a standard apple iphone as it doesn't connect to every carrier in nz, it's resale value is now so much less whoever heard of a nz iphone that can't work on 2degrees (crazy). When I got it back from vodafone it was a complete replacement. Brand new iphone 4 16gb black. There is obviously something done to these phones that stop them working on 2degrees.

Can someone suggest an unlocking service as I am almost sure that the phone is locked to some extent. Would love it to be something else.

codyc1515 you have been a great person to talk though this issue with and I thank you all for your time.

I don't think (if its on iOS 5.1) that you can unlock it.

Nope it's not related no need to call that 0800 number

From the top of that page " Prior to May 2008, a limited number of locked Vodafone mobiles were released via a number of official Vodafone channels "

Vodafone NZ does not have the infrastructure to support unlocking iPhones and never has as they (Vodafone) have never sold them locked.

Call Apple and if they say there is nothing they can do speak with their manager, then their manager, etc., etc. It has worked for me in the past with other things.

Yeah I tried calling that number 3 times. Three different people, all say your phone is not locked we don't lock iphones. 2degrees will need to change some settings. Just to reiterate his is not a 2 degrees sim problem or a 2degrees settings problem this is definitely something to do with the phone.

I am sure it's something around the Apple service agent and they need to do something!

Tell them its on some other carrier and that the phone is locked. Who knows, it might get you somewhere?

Every iPhone has a IMEI number and these are entered into Apple's Database of Phones. When the Phone tried to Activate the iPhone it checks these numbers and if matched so the iPhone is "unlocked". i.e. IMEI = NZ iPhone = totally unlock etc. IMEI = AT&T iPhone Make it available to AT&T only etc.

It is a "pretty common" problem. This problem usually occurs with replacement/refurbished iPhones as Apple's Database is not up to date correctly and is caused by Apple's Systems.. Not Vodafone or Telecom or anyone.

The only people who can fix it is Apple.. Give them a ring , they should be able to fix this problem easily..

Speaking from experiance when i got a replacement iPhone4 the following was stated by apple.

"If the device you are replacing is locked to a carrier then the replacement will be also locked to the original carrier"

sounds to me that if the device doesnt activate with a Vodafone or Telecom Sim also then it is from abroad.

Also as stated early in the thread apple had confirmed it was locked.  so this sounds right
