khull: apparently it 'gets better' the more people use it. Is it like open street maps where it gathers info from various users?

It certainly takes traffic info from users. It's a social media navigation app. I've never tried it out for getting from one place to another though.

I find the new Apple Maps ok actually. ChCh satellite view is post 22 Feb, many roads shown as closed (updated 14 Sept 2012). The only thing I don't like is skinny streets in standard view, I prefer the fat colourful streets, easier for quick visuals. So, it seems quite ok for what is a free voice/turn by turn navigator. It will do the job more then adequately, assuming it is kept updated.

I admit that iMaps sucks pretty hard and is not the usually polished finish we expect from Apple. People freaking out about not getting public transportation data is a little over the top. All you have to do is go to google maps in Safari and then add it as button to your home screen and you have all the google maps data that was in the previous maps app. So it's not exactly as apocalyptic as some people make it out to be.

I'm missing something. I have iOS6, New Maps, Google Maps via Safari. Google Maps has more POI, has no cloased roads. New Maps has less POI, but has closed roads, voice, turn by turn navigation. Why the big move to use Google Maps instead? I've used new Maps in the car today and works fine, and accurately.

I've used it twice to navigate through Christchurch and it has done a good job.
I miss streetview a little bit I suppose?
Not that I ever used it, but my parents did if they flogged my iPad...
Apart from that, meh. I quite like the turn-by-turn functionality.

I tried it today, and it gave me the wrong route. It said I could turn right on a road, when that was changed years ago to only allow left turning traffic. Even my tomtom GPS unit has it corrected, so not sure why it is wrong on the apple version, if they are using tomtoms data. Wellingtons maps are also pretty low resolution, and Kapiti aerial photos are in black and white. That said the 3D stuff in New York and London is pretty cool. But the 3D in other cities like Tokyo, Paris etc is missing. It should really be called (maps beta) as it doesn't feel like a final release.

Dunners and Matt.  Understood. I guess where I am coming from is that as far as a map is concened, yes Google is superior. I am only interested in a "fullish" featured GPS solution, which Apple Maps provides. My limited testing in the car today showed it worked well. Voice, turn by turn, and the next turn indicator and the one after. Satellite, Flyover, etc is cool, but at least for me it only has novelty value. That said, there is Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Google Earth, all free to cover all bases?

Ha. Ok! Well, it is a fullish featured GPS. Accurate, seems to be so far, although only used it 5 times.

"i dont fell"     I will correct your grandma, should be "I didn't fall"  Innocent
