I have an order in at Noel Leemings for a new series 3 without the cell (obviously) Price with discount $569 the base model. Which of course leads me to sell my 2. When looking up what they go for now on NL they have them priced at $629, same watch put a series 2 how strange....

Not really, they appear to be almost identical in all features, apart from the s3, which siri speaks.On the s2 siri doesn't speak. The s3 has a faster chip to allow for siri to speak, but apart from a slight speed increase with a new chip, they are almost identical. This is likely why apple isn't selling the s2 any more. How come you are switching? Also the base price form apple NZ is $579 of the series 3 42mm without cell so you aren't getting much of a discount. The series 2 42mm looks to be $499 from pbtech.

I think the point was that Noel Leeming still has the 2 but for much more money than the 3.

Why switching from 2 to a 3? I can tell you why I’m considering switching from the 2 to a 3: I’m at an age where I can’t read without reading glasses. So to have spoken replies to Siri rather than having to read the watch and for bloody everything having to get my glasses out would make a huge difference to me.

Why switching from 2 to a 3? I can tell you why I’m considering switching from the 2 to a 3: I’m at an age where I can’t read without reading glasses. The mickey face on the series two already speaks the time, you just touch the face, so don't have to ask siri what the time is.

But siri talking will help visually impaired people, and it does need internet connectivity for that to work, and the iphone will do that too, which you need anyway to have an apple watch. But siri on the apple watch is var more restricted in what questions you can ask it, compared to the iphone. It will often say that you need to use the iphone for that question.

The series 2 did retail for over $600, and some retailers are now discounting it. NL just haven't decreased their price. The series 3 non LTE is priced more closer to the series 1, and the series 1 has been discounted by apple as their entry model. I expect that the LTE model if it is sold in NZ, will likely be similar or more than the series 2 model was selling for.

So $569 instead of $579 $10 bucks! That will buy me a cup of coffee at the airport! not to be sneezed at!

Why am I upgrading well A. because I can B. I will be interested in playing with the heart monitor thingy as I have a dicky heart you never know it may just save my life! Then I can become one of those clickbait stories! Apple Saved My life! I also reckon its good to try and keep fairly upto date with apple or you lose to much when you come to sell it. I left my Ipad Pro to long before I sold it now I will have to take a hit when I do , that is when I upgrade to the 10.5 is one? Its all good fun! and lets not forget its only money If trump has a bad day we could all be dead anyway so enjoy it while you can!

It depends on what you mean by "visually impaired". There may be a convenience factor in using Siri for someone who has trouble seeing the small screen but functions as someone who can see.

I'm totally blind, and the technology that allows me to use Apple products isn't Siri. Siri's a useful thing to have for me, just as it is for anyone. But VoiceOver is a full screen reader that is built into all Apple products, including the Watch. It changes the gesture set and speaks everything that's on the screen, allowing you to navigate the entire OS and use third-party apps if they've been designed correctly.

I upgraded from the original Watch to the series 3, and the speed improvement for a VoiceOver user is worth it. The old original Watch was getting very sluggish with VoiceOver in watchOS 4.

But interestingly, Siri's voice doesn't speak when VoiceOver is on, VoiceOver is still handling the speaking back, probably because Siri doesn't actually say much on the Watch.

Interesting comment on the upgrade process, I have always seen the Apple watch as a purchase then replace when it becomes unusable, much like I would any watch. I also treat my iPad like this, however that is more because my iPad will run flat 3 times between uses (weeks if not months or standby) So my iPad Air2 is sufficient, although I would like a snappier TouchID!

The iPhone however I try to maximise the return by selling and upgrading every year.

Luckily my heart is fine, however my Apple Watch upgraded to WatchOS4 is telling me that I am in great shape, something that my Dr agrees with as do I!

The Apple Watch series 3 looks like a significant upgrade in a number of areas.

Given a choice, and if I wasn’t responsible for a tiny human i’d probably be upgrading!

Like what? Apart from the LTE model, which offers a significant new feature, the only main new feature I can see is that it has a faster processor that allows siri to speak, but the series 2 isn't laggy. Also some updates with wireless transfer speeds, and it can detect when you are going up and downstairs. But apart from that, they are the only differences I can see between the series 2 and 3. Although if you want to go for a ceramic, they now come in a charcoal colour, which is nice but pricey. I expect a watch to last quite a few years due to it being an occasional device, unlike a iphone which is more regularly accessed, which you may expect to update every couple of years to keep up to the cutting edge specs.

Upgrading the series 2 to watch OS 4, will provide almost all the updates, such as phone screen dialing, new watch faces, heart rate tracking, updated fitness app, siri watch screen, torch mode etc.

I would buy the series 3 over the series 2, but I wouldn't upgrade from a series 2, unless going to the LTE model. There are far bigger differences between the iphone 7 and 8, even though that isn't considered a big upgrade.

You’re right in everything you said. I think it’s easy to mistake new watchOS 4 features for new Series 3 features. I still think, though, Siri talking back is a major of the Series 3, for me and my need for reading glasses anyway.
