khull: the real question is would you still want one if people hand them out for free? i

The real answer is hell yes, I'd have one for each member of the family.

Also, regarding Multi-tasking; how many things do you want to do at once?
iPad (and iPhone) can play music while running other Apps. Email checks in the background.
Apps are so quick to launch, I don't think I would have any use for multi-tasking.

i agree it is quick to launch apps, but true multitasking would be nice.  often when im in a middle of a book with comixology, i get and email, go to home read the email then go back to reading, but comixology takes a little while to load (a second or 2 of a loading screen), thats kind of annoying.

I really wanted a iPad for my bus trips - I watch my TV on the bus and have done with a 1st Gen 16GB ipod touch for the last 3 years.

The problem I have is this:

Say i'm watching weeds, skins, anything on after 8pm at night and they have a topless scene in it. All of a sudden you think "CRAP! if someone glances at my ipod they'll think i'm watching porn on the bus!" so, simple! just angle the ipod away from whoevers next to you and problem solved.

If you're using an iPad, not so simple - Everyone 4 rows away from you be wondering who the pervert is looking at boobies on the bus.

I did get handed a free iPhone 4, but sold it and bought a HTC Desire :)

lol... Reason #203 for not buying an iPad. Possible detection as a pervert when watching TV on public transport ;-)

Reminds me of the last time I went to Aussie, Air NZ's TV entertainment system was loaded with a couple of Entourage eps that had topless scenes, guy next to me was like WTF are you watching.

I feel self conscious enough using a laptop in public let alone an iPad on the streets.

Haha, no comment on that one.

I think if I ever had an iPad, I would invest in one of those privacy screens.  With such a clear and bright screen, even people on a sharp angle can see your screen quite clearly.

This is actually a problem when travelling - the screens are so bright that people using iPads to watch TV/movies are annoying on airplanes due to the flicking you get in a dark cabin.  Much more distracting and disrupting to sleep than the aircraft IFE.

I see people using theirs all over the place in public in many countries, I can't see myself being self-conscious about using it.  Although I have nothing to carry it with me in, so it will typically be a stay-at-home device.

I agree with the others about its potential use as a media consumption device for slacking around at home with, which really does seem to be the niche fit for it.  Also as a content manipulation device for the TV.

That said, mine is still unopened... one day when I have more time.

True, can you imagine, say, in cattle class, 20 people using their iPads in a dark cabin at night on the plane.  They might as well turn the lights back on, haha.

Anyway, great portable device.  Is it a must?  Not really.  Is it a need?  Not really.  Is it a want?  Yes for me!

That's pretty much the problem.  I have heard that British Airways have had quite a lot of feedback about it on their New York - London flights; and apparently are considering looking at "light zone" and "dark zone" areas in the cabins.

Having sat near to a few people with them, I can personally confirm it is pretty irritating...

And this is where the Apple marketing machine wins, scarily.

Of course in technology saturated markets, all companies have to look at how to extract further cash from their market by introducing new complimentary or overlapping technologies.  This is where the iFamily is very well thought out - the iPad fills that niche that just isn't quite filled by the iPod or the iPhone or the Macbook.
