tdgeek: I am only interested in a "fullish" featured GPS solution, which Apple Maps provides.

are you serious? went out walking today. lucky i dont fell into the sea Tongue Out

Ha. Ok! Well, it is a fullish featured GPS. Accurate, seems to be so far, although only used it 5 times.

"i dont fell"     I will correct your grandma, should be "I didn't fall"  Innocent

Didn't see your pic. Heres mine

yes, are!

Odd why yours shows it in the sea and mine on land. Is mine in the correct location, or is it still wrong?

Don't try asking it to find you a hospital either. Auckland and Mercy-Ascot are conspicuously absent, and North Shore proposes you visit a veterinary hospital.

Pray St John drivers don't start using iOS 6 Maps for ambulance route-finding!

Ah, that's because the satellite map and the street map are actually mis-aligned.  Off by anywhere up to 50 metres, which makes hybrid view look spectacularly bollocks.

I've got Auckland station in the middle of the harbour. That, in itself, isn't an issue - Google maps has often directed my navigation into the middle of Wellington harbour so I don't see iOS as being any worse in that regard. More worrying is that a friends street address in Canada is showing as being in the USA.

I can't see any great benefit from running iOS6 on iPad2 so am looking at rolling back from the upgrade.

I've upgraded my phone for comedy value, since I never used the maps on it anyway, but I'm kinda glad at this point that my 1st gen iPad won't run iOS6 ;o)

Apple is recruiting heaps of former Google gis technicians.

I actually wonder why ios6 doesn't work on he ipad 1, since it has a faster processor than the 3gs, and the same processor as the iphone 4 and ipod touch 4

I think IOS6 is quite an improvement over ios5, esepcially the stores and user interface fixes. But I have noticed a bit of lag with the ipad2. Also I think there will eventually be maps and youtube for the ipad released by google, unless apple block them.

Does this mean that iOS is going to get fragmented?

I noticed this with iPad2 as well and I can't figure out why Siri isn't allowed on it (apart from Apple trying to encourage sales of iPad v.3 that is). I suspect pigs will fly before (a) Google bothers with a maps app for Apple, and (b) Apple approves one.

Siri is "in hardware"; it's a 4S/iPad 3 feature, not an iOS feature. So yeah, Apple wants people to buy new hardware!

a. Apparently Google has already submitted it, but
b. Oink. Who knows whether it'll ever see the light of day?

I don't believe that is correct as people have activate siri on jailbroken ios5 ipad2 devices, which you couldn't do if it was somethng to do with the hardware. Also the ipad 2 has an A5 chip like the iphone 4S. The ipad3 has a better chip in it.

I think it has more to selling newer ipads and keeping buyers of newer ones happy. I think the reason why the ipad 1 doesn't support ios6 is because ios6 will be the last idate for the ipad2. If the ipad 1 and 2 both end on ios6, people with the ipad 2 will feel a bit ripped off.
The thing is that the new ipad mini that is expected to be released, is expected to have the exact same specs as the ipad 2, just minified and perhaps with siri and a better camera. But this will have ios6 as default, and buyers of it will expect to be able to upgrade to ios7 and perhaps 8 in the future. I expect this will mean that future IOS versions may not be as demanding on the power of the chip, as the A5 chip(which is being used in the (ipod touch) is now getting close to a couple of years old.

Hence the quotes :)

It's software, but it's sold as part of the device, not a part of the iOS update.

False....this was always just a rampant rumor. 9to5Mac propagated that rumor in this article and they have already walked it back (read down the article to see the walk back).  It was also followed up today by a techcrunch article with a Google source saying they hope to have it in the App store by Christmas
