I am sure Apple will have included a flight mode.

Also you can have non-transmitting small appliences on during take off and landing on some aircraft now.

sonyxperiageek: $10,000 for the 18-Karat Gold version! Shut up and take my money... Not.

How many dollars worth of gold are in it though . Also isn't that US dollars, so will probably be more than 15k in NZ. It wouldn't be so bad if the tech in it could be swapped out. But as ths sort of tech has a 2 year life cycle to sync with mobile contracts in the US, I just can't see the market, for the more expensive one. Of course there will be people who buy them, largely  show people that they have got an apple watch first.
Apple are now playing catch up, as hardware wise, other manufactures produce as good hardware cheaper. Google need to come out with one.

MikeAqua: Is there really a window the pilots can open?  Wouldn't seem like a good idea at high altitude.

KiwiNZ:
they will give it to the pilot and he/she will throw it out the window

More efficient, no need to throw it out it will get sucked out

Some say this product will push Apple over the line to be the first trillion dollar company.  I think Apple, Google etc with so much cash could do a lot to benefit humanity.  They seem to be funding some amazing "moon shot" projects.  Everything from medical diagnostics , age reversal and A. I.  I suppose I would rather have trillion dollar tech companies full of futurists at the helm, than say big oil companies.  Now.. if they could only share some profit with factory workers :/

MikeAqua:

How are the airlines going to enforce that delineate between smart and dumb watches?  You can already buy dumb watches that look like smart watches.

Airlines will finally wake up and recognise that the rules are stupid and unnecessary - some are already starting to see sense.

I'm curious as to how you decided that the rules are stupid and unnecessary.

The rules were once sensible and cautious... the effect of electronic devices on navigation equipment has been documented. As that obsolete? equipment is superceded, and the behaviour of portable electronic devices has become more predictable, it has become possible to relax the rules.

However, the aviation industry (including both airlines and regulators (e.g. CAA)) is notoriously conservative and change-averse. That's not necessarily a bad thing -- it is usually safer to not allow new things to happen. But it does mean that they tend to lag behind the latest innovations.

By the simple fact that they are regularly flouted to no ill effect, and have been for years. Airlines are now enabling wifi and even localised mobile networks etc onboard so clearly the risks (if they ever existed) are long gone. I get the cautious and conservative aspect, but I would say it has more to do with being too lazy to get off their bums, properly investigate and make a decision. Doing nothing is the easy option.

On propped AirNZ craft (Q300, ATR, Beech), you must shut down your phone/reader/camera/tablet/portable game console (I.e. anything that could conceivably have a wireless function) for take off, and again for descent and landing.  On that basis you should require shut down of a smart watch too.

But ...

A) Can you shut a smart watch down?
B) How will cabin crew identify and enforce?
C) From a risk perspective is a smart watch any different from a g-shock with GPS/BT (and airplane mode)?

Maybe if smart watches become more common it will prompt a common sense review of these policies.

Bill Gates certainly is. I wish some of these tech giants would too, but I guess they have share holders who need to make big profits.. These watches are high margin devices for them, I wonder what they actually cost to make. Compare the apple watch mid range model (eg stainless steel black) with an iphone 6, which is cheaper, does far more, battery lasts longer etc, and it is pocketable. Why do you need a watch if you have an iphone in your pocket? Apart for the coolness (or not) factor with being able to talk to someone on your watch, I think it is gimmicky at the moment, and not a must have

I've always found it bizarre how airlines trust passengers to turn off these devices.  I suspect if a proper study was conducted they would find that a very high percentage of devices remain on.  Not to mention they feed alcohol to people the whole flight.. "hello, would all passengers -excuse me sir! please stop shooting spit balls out of your drink straw and pay attention! I need you all to turn off your mobile devices or we could be killed in a violent plane crash -everyone got that?  ok good.".

The Pebble has a flight mode.  As an electronic device in flight mode I would be surprised if it interfered with avionics any more than any other sports watch with an LCD display.

I'm sure the Apple watch will be a success of sorts especially considering there were 4 articles on the Stuff technology tile about it - multiply that around the world and it's the advertising money can't buy.

Personally, I expect that it will open the general public's eyes to the already available technology and hopefully Pebble will flourish as a great alternative (I love my Pebble).  Still on the fence whether to get a kick-starter Pebble Time Steel.

Procrastination eventually pays off.

I think I figured out what happened to MH370... lol

But seriously... typically there are multiple paths to safety. When you leave your device on, you close one of them off. It's only when all the other paths are closed that a crash happens. To put it another way, leaving a device on might usually change the probability of a crash from 1:1000000 to 2:1000000. But 1 in a million times, it might change it from 1:2 to 1:1.

As you say, most people don't even know if they have a device that can transmit and/or how to stop it transmitting.

I've know I've unintentionally left my phone on, with phone, data GPS and BT enabled on a flight.  I'm guessing quite a few people have.

Certainly not US$9,500 worth of gold, thats for sure!

Where there's bling, there's always a market, so I am quite sure Apple will push some units out.

But remember it is APPLE GOLD which they have said is special and many times stronger and tougher than ordinary gold.
