LennonNZ: I have added a custom APN generator. It is not tested yet.. but in theory should download and ask for the custom APN's username/password

Let me know if it works.

Craig

what is the reson for a custom APN generator? I am going overseas to Australia in a couple of days on a trip any idea if i can chnage the apn to australian vodafone and hopefully just pay their rates rather than roaming rates... what do you think?

PS anyone got any idea of what the correct APN for vodafone Australia would actually be... or won t it work even if i put the correct info in?

this is unlikely to work, as you will be using a VFNZ SIM so you will be on roaming and the assocated roaming rates no matter which APN you use

LennonNZ:
someone posted the link on nziphone.com and it looks like the admin just removed it 5 mins after the post..
A common issue with both nzmac and nziphone...  fair enough on this one post (fringe of legality - however since Apple have clearly provided details not sure what issue is) - But generally they are overmoderated by owner and not really an open community (like Geekzone is).

Thanks nzbullet for sharing. I have tested with the sim from a 1GB plan (normally with express card) and works a treat.  Now hoping to work the custom setting to get VFAU APN to work... will test later in the week.

For those testing on casual plans, you might want to try using a very light page (eg the following bus times page  is 0.7kb)

Those in Christchurch and looking to find when next bus arrives.... http://rtt.metroinfo.org.nz/RTT/Public/Mobile/SelectPlatform.aspx
Key in the bus stop that you are stood next to and will give you an ETA based upon the GPS in the bus.

What would be good is to be able to use the iPhone GPS to find out the location and lookup the bus stop and then provide the arrival times etc.
The Local Picks by TripAdvisor (free) looks useful for finding restaurants based upon GPS location.

hi!

I am very excited about this thread and knowing that i can maybe get the iPhone 3G for prepay. First of all:

Can I go into a vodafone store and buy the iPhone with no plan and just insert my prepay sim and it willl work with voice and sms? No lengthy activation process?

Then can I go onto Wifi and download the mobile config file to change the APN so I can browse internet on prepay?

Does anyone know if this process voids warrant?

Thanks LennonNZ for a great service!

Yes - will sell to anyone

Yes
Beware of costs of data usage on prepay!

Sorry not sure there.. would not imagine as you could reverse it and reset it to iPhone APN if needbe.

Yeh but I only use it outside of Wifi for email/maps etc so the $1 a day plan would suit me fine

Hey thanks for your answers... Vodafone is selling them as is for $979 for 8gb do you know anything one else seling them that  is cheaper? + reliable?

So Vodafone once against fails and the prepay iPhone comes to New Zealand!

Not sure where cheaper?
Not sure what you mean by reliable?   I have not considered parallel importers.

I think the failing is the level communication that has been made to the public, which has led to the media posting various statements which are inaccurate and confusing.  Yet interesting that VF have not corrected them.

I think most people would be happy if;
a) they could have full flexibility with voice and data options,
b) were given correct information to make decision

Now you can use the normal APN with OnAccount OR Prepay... customers have been able to purchase outright.. but now is easier to set up the data access.

And the handset cost... that was pretty close to what was predicted prior to launch.

Works for me with the standard data / prepay plans.

I've tried changing the APN to my corporate APN with no luck however (using the apple tool), anyone else managed to get a corporate APN going on the iPhone 3G yet?

Bah, just my luck.
Out of interest (and as a hope to track down what is causing it), what APNs are enabled on your phone? I (due to a crazy office lady) have only the corporate APN enabled on my SIM.
Also, is your APN static or dynamic IP.
Reply VIA PM if you want.
Cheers!

This is anoying me..

username (String, mandatory) This string specifies the username for this APN. If it is missing, the device prompts for it during installation
password (data,optional) This data represents the passeword for the user for the APN... If it is missing from the payload, the device prompts you for it during profile instation..

but..
 <dict>
                                        <key>apn</key>
                                        <string>XXXXXXX</string>
                                        <key>password</key>
                                                <data></data>
                                        <key>username</key>
                                                <string></string>
                                </dict>
 APN = XXXXXXX, but doesn't ask you for the username/password (so both blank). (which is ok...)  so I remove the <data></data> and the <string></string>

so
<dict>
                                        <key>apn</key>
                                        <string>XXXXXXX</string>
                                        <key>password</key>
                                        <key>username</key>
                                </dict>

and the iphone complains :-(

even tried
<dict>
                                        <key>apn</key>
                                        <string>XXXXXXX</string>
                                </dict>

it either complains or doesn't ask for the username/password

ideas??

hmmm, Ive read the thread and people seem to be saying "oooh watch it, as it costs $$$$"

ummm I ask this....

if you have the $$$ to play about and forever changing the sims etc etc, why dont you make life easy and perhaps more cost effective and get off pre pay!
or just wait until the $1.00 plan gets going.

my thoughts....  actually economic sense !
