Anyway, great portable device.  Is it a must?  Not really.  Is it a need?  Not really.  Is it a want?  Yes for me!

Kinda reminds me of this.

The other half and I had a play with a couple in JB Hi-Fi on the weekend and the games were pretty neat (zombies vs plants) and I could see her using it for reading at night.

BUT

It isn't a device that we need, she still has her books and although the touch screen gives a new perspective on games, i fear it would wear off over time for us.

Not a device we will be getting soon, but an iPod Touch is in the future for her (rather than two iPods for personal music and Zumba, she can have one)

heavenlywild: True, can you imagine, say, in cattle class, 20 people using their iPads in a dark cabin at night on the plane.  They might as well turn the lights back on, haha.

That's pretty much the problem.  I have heard that British Airways have had quite a lot of feedback about it on their New York - London flights; and apparently are considering looking at "light zone" and "dark zone" areas in the cabins.

Having sat near to a few people with them, I can personally confirm it is pretty irritating...

I don't see any difference between an iPad and the inseat TV's. You have little to no control over what the person next to you does for inflight entertainment. If you want to sleep, earplugs and eye covers are mandatory anyway.

Having said that, if it was dark and I was getting a tan off the iPad next to me, I'd have no problems asking them to turn the brightness down.

Yeah that's right. When you are using an iPad you can tell if the light is affecting others, especially in the dark. That has more to do with the arrogance and disrespect of some iPad users than the device itself.

You can be in a plane where you can hear someones crappy music from three seats over too. I turn my brightness down on the bus so it doesn't annoy others - in fact i have found that i like the brightness down in more situations than not.

The majority of Apple products are hype,
there just happens to be a whole lot of stupid people that are easily amused

Haters will hate.

Personally as much as I want one.  I'll avoid the current gen and wait for the 2nd (budget allowing).  Or even Android tablet if they're competitive (and I can tolerate what will no doubt be a TN LCD).

Even if it's just a refresh that includes a FaceTime camera, and more RAM it'll be worthwhile.

Is the current iPad hindered at all by its "lack of ram"?
What can't you do that you should be able to do due to the ram limitations?

this is a slap in the face!

Absolutely nothing. The only potential downside is around multitasking when iOS 4.x is released on iPad.

The inseat TVs tend to have diffusers which minimises indirect light towards other passengers - it's pretty focused on only the person behind them. It also minimises things like reflections off the ceiling...

You don't have to be seated immediately next to the iPad either - a few rows away is enough to be irritating if it's bright and angled towards the ceiling.

Multitasking, large web pages, flash?

There are loads of things you can't do because of a lack of ram. but the iPad wasn't designed to do these things. AFAIK flash isnt to do with a lack of ram.. It's like there are things that your laptop can't do because it doesn't have a touchscreen, or there are loads of things your microwave can't do because it doesn't have food processor attached to it.

If you are wanting to do something that requires heaps of ram, chances are you would be better off doing those things on something other than an iPad. The iPad does the things it was designed to do really well though.

The iPad (for me) would be nothing more than a toy...so the cost would be prohibitive...for me.

Personally, I'd love a Netbook, running W7, with oodles of HDD space, Ram and USB ports, an optical drive and a capacitive touchscreen.

that'd be (for me) ultimately a lot more useful.

I'd still like an iPad...but only if the 64gb wifi versio nwas priced around $250.00

MikeyPI: I agree its the wrong comaprison.. iPad = E-reader....

i dont even think the ipad is a e-reader either.  it really in a class of its own (well it started a new class, there are copies now).

ipad to me =  ereader, browser, music/video player, big remote for my tv.

I think its the ferrari of e-readers, I think it was designed to be one, and the marketing boffins at Apple decided that that was a niche market and so it became its own class...

Its a average "tablet", crap computer, but the sickest e-reader on the market....

Hi MikeyPI,

I would be interested in you detailing your experience with the iPad so I can put some context around your comments.  Cheers.

As for a detailed experience.. I have used Kindle, iBooks and FreeBooks and the eReader aspect depends largely on the app, just like doing anything else. If the app is nice and good to use and makes use the features the iPad has to offer then the experience will be good. Being able to turn the brightness down, make bookmarks, have instant access to dictionary and notes, search for pages or words are all great things about iBooks - we just have to wait until copyright issues are sorted out until we get any good sort of books. But it will read documents and pdfs from emails too, so its not just an eReader as such.

I use it for magazines and comics as well, Being able to rotate it helps, and being so portable means that i can have 50 books (and counting) + all my favourite passages highlighted and bookmarked, for whenever I may need them. I'd be happy to talk more about the eReader aspect (and it is only ONE aspect) more if you have any questions.

Hell, If you are in wellington you are free to have a play on mine for a while if you wish. It is very much a hands-on device and I struggle to do it justice in a medium such as this.

Thanks revolushn for the most generous offer, but I think you may have missed my point slightly ;)

I own an iPad myself, but was interested in what experience MikeyPI had with an iPad in order to post the comments he did.  I'm by no means an Apple Fanboy (I own an iPod 5.5G simply because it is the only device which will hold all my music, although the sound quality from it is crap, an iPhone 3GS which does everything I need, and now an iPad.  But I would never ever own a Mac), so am interested in the reasoning for a lot of the negative comments posted here about the iPad.

I've had a great deal of use out of mine in the 2.5 weeks I've had it now, and it HAS replaced my netbook which I bought for similar use.  I think the iPad is a brilliant device filling the needs and wants I currently have.

But others are entitled to their opinions too, and it doesn't wind me up that people don't like the device.  It is a little annoying though how people automatically dislike something because it is from a certain company though, with little or no experience of the product they are criticising.  This applies to non Apple products as well.  And like I said, my iPod 5.5G's sound quality is awful.  But I can say that having owned it for a few years and used it extensively.
