I don't believe that is correct as people have activate siri on jailbroken ios5 ipad2 devices, which you couldn't do if it was somethng to do with the hardware. Also the ipad 2 has an A5 chip like the iphone 4S. The ipad3 has a better chip in it.

It's software, but it's sold as part of the device, not a part of the iOS update.

Get your point. Although the ipad 3 was never sold with Siri as part of the hardware, nor was that an advertised feature when it was sold . It has only just been added with IOS6. But I think it was expected to be added as it came out after the iphone 4S.

I do want a spoken turn by turn navigation system for my iPad - I was very happy using Nokia maps until I drowned my expensive phone. Now the owner of a $30 Nokia 100.

I'm using NavFree at the moment which isn't nearly as good, but it is free.

Paid alternative apps look like TomTom ($94.99 eek!)

or Sygic ($46.99) which I hadn't heard of before reading this thread.

Is Sygic any good? I don't want to pay for Sygic and then find myself forking out for TomTom later on...

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

I had Navfree, but when checking against new Apple Maps (which gave correct route) Navfree wanted to take me to the motorway, then back track off that, to a main rd. Long way out, I can go almost as crows flies, which is also quicker than heading towards motorway then taking main rd. CoPilot did the same but at least it gave 3 routes, route 3 was correct

I have Sygic for a while now ... it is pretty good.
If you want free apps, try Waze. But it needs data to work though.

I have found that the 'find my ipad' app' is pretty useless now. It used to pinpoint the location right down to the number of the address. But now as there are no address numbers or property boundaries on the map, it isn't as good as it once was. Also apple, what is up with the horrible fake leather stitching that is appearing on some newer apps. Luckily the new clock app on the ipad was designed in the older style. The new clock app is probably my favorite feature, which isn't saying much for ios6 on the ipad. It is becoming a bit of a mismatch of styles now. The ipod app on the ipad also has a fake wood pattern, although that was there in ios5. The new app store designs with cover flow and the fact that you can now download apps without exiting the app store is a good new feature.

According to apple's map I have a sushi shop and a Vietnamese restaurant right next door and across the street. In the 11 years I've lived here I've seen neither. (It's a residential neighbourhood and most houses have been here since the fifties, lol)

I use Tomtom on my iphone anyway so I'm not worried but if Google puts out an app I'll grab it.

Well, I give them props for at least owning up to the mistake this has been. I don't think you would have ever see a letter like that issued by Jobs. However, I'm not entirely sure jobs would have let maps release in it's current state.

The good news about this letter is that the message has come down from the mountain top that they know iMaps needs massive improvements. Give Apple's massive cash reserves, being based in spitting distance from Google HQ, they have access to the talent and technology to fix maps.

In the meantime it's growing pains for everyone on iOS.

Back onto the main topic, though....

Am I correct that iOS maps does not offer auto-reroute on the iPhone 4?

Auto-reroute works well on my new iPad, but my iPhone 4 doesn't seem to reroute if I go off-course?

We have a tandoori restaurant at the end of our road in Richmond according to iOS6 maps, right on top of someones house!
Searching on Google reveals the actual restaurant is in England on a road with the same name.

It does reroute. It will often re-route just to try and get you back on the stupid suggestion it previously gave you, but eventually it works out what you're doing/

Just so you guys know how the "other half" live, Google Now! checks my appointments, looks up traffic conditions so it can remind me when it's time to leave, then gives me one-click navigation ... which automatically re-routes.. and it's accurate. Apple have some catching up to do. I'm sure they'll get there, but you don't build this stuff quickly.
