Prepay and $1 for 10megs a day will suite me fine AND find lots of wifi if you can. I Queenstown had a better Wifi coverage from people the likes of HQWifi i would just pay them a month as I wanted and use the wifi and turn data off on my phone

username (String, mandatory) This string specifies the username for this APN. If it is missing, the device prompts for it during installation
password (data,optional) This data represents the passeword for the user for the APN... If it is missing from the payload, the device prompts you for it during profile instation..

but..

                                        apn
                                        XXXXXXX
                                        password

                                        username


APN = XXXXXXX, but doesn't ask you for the username/password (so both blank). (which is ok...) so I remove the and the

so

                                        apn
                                        XXXXXXX
                                        password
                                        username


and the iphone complains :-(

even tried

                                        apn
                                        XXXXXXX


it either complains or doesn't ask for the username/password

ideas??

Have you tried something like <data />?

Hmm I'm not having much luck with this. I browse to the above page using wifi. I proceed with the "hack". Turn off wifi and then attempt to browse to a page and it just tells me that I'm not connected to the internet. Trying to find a fix I've turned 3g on and off, turned roaming on and off. I haven't reset the iphone yet. Any other ideas?

Your in NZ? Using a NZ prepay vodafone sim? normal data plan/sim? or what?

you clicked on the Allow Data on any Sim?

try removing the profile (Settings, general, profiles) and trying again. Many other people have had it working ok..

Yep I'm in NZ, using a NZ prepay voda sim. I clicked on the Allow Data on Any Sim. I've tried removing the profile and reinstalling it. Unfortunately it's still a no go. However, I think it might have something to do with the fact that when I first plugged it into itunes I restored my 3g iPhone from a previous backup of my 2g iPhone. This might have screwed things up. I'm currently downloading the iPhone software update in order to restore my iphone back to new. Then I'll try again and report my findings.

You mean the simcard may have had all data access removed completely? I know this can be done and make them SMS and non outbound callable as well
(so only inwards SMS and TEXTs) are allowed)

If this APN is not in HLR they will not be able to connect to www.vodafone.net.nz

They used to remove the wildcard ( * ) APN when the prepay data exploit was around where when a customers prepay credit fell to $0 they could continue to use unlimited data. He may have one of these simcards. As john said, it's a simple fix with either customer service or 0800 921 021.

John, you're more knowledgeable than almost anyone else on these boards, do you work for solutions support? Those guys are fantastic

This would entice more people to data, and also let people who download songs or games a more reasonable price to pay for paid items.

More is not always better! This could cause issues like blocking (network busy)

Nah... $3 for 50MB would be reasonable...

I have a better plan... how about we calculate the average that people might need per day for casual use and then reduce it by 50% and then charge rocket the price up to $1/MB for anyone who dares to go over.

Better than where we are now... unless you want to buy something on vodafone live. I think they are really shooting themselves in the foot. Do they not want VF live anymore. I don't.

Yep it turns out that restoring from a backup of a 2g iphone is a big no no. Sure enough I restored the phone entirely and started afresh and bingo this hack works fine and im happily browsing on 3g data.

The website has been changed a little.

I've removed the change back to www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz APN as it is not needed at all as all you need to do is goto settings.. general.. profile and remove the config from there.

Also making up a custom APN is being a problem.

Seems (I think and tried by a couple of others) that the instructions are a little wrong maybe (or Iphone has a bug)

It says if you remove the key for the username/password it should ask you for it after you install the config.. but this does not work (works for wifi and other settings tho just not for APN)

I can ask for the username/password and put them in.. but I don't really want to know them (also the password is encrypted somehow and I can't figure out the exact format of it yet)

I have an existing iPhone (1.0) and have been accessing data through GPRS network, verrrryyyy slowlllllyyyy

If I put this sim card into a 3G iPhone does that mean I will be 3G data speed? How do I know if my sim card is 3G compatible?

No it is the technology in the phone that dictates the speed not the SIM card. To get faster speed you will need a new iphone.
