3D Touch has definitely gone for me on my iPhone X running iOS 13.1 beta 3. I can no longer peek and pop. Works more like a long press now.

As usual a new Apple cycle has attracted the usual fanbois and ignorant critics. The ever brainless Mark Gurman from Bloomberg was completely dismissive of the three camera/lenses set up without understanding what makes it so good. The three lenses have the same white balance and are tuned to work perfectly together. There's a CNet video that shows how the supposed Huawei "equivalent's" lenses suffered from blatantly obvious differences in quality and white balance. The Iphone XS was already class-leading for its video capabilities and now the Pro has basically left all other smartphones stratospheres behind. The way the ultra-wide camera has been integrated into the whole system increases the utility of the phone for someone like me and my partner (who both love our photography but don't always want to carry around a camera) many-fold.

I was a "grudge" upgrader (i.e. I was definitely going to upgrade from my X because I'd prefer my daily driver to be less than 2 years old and plus I don't really want to take on the risk of having to argue the toss to get my phone fixed under the CGA should it fail) and wasn't too excited by the upgrade but I am genuinely impressed. And if Apple lives up to its usually reliable promises around battery life, this factor alone is highly exciting. If the Pro had 5G, it would have been an absolute grand slam; in the event, currently I would consider it to be an excellent upgrade.

Yes, you can get a lot of what's on the Pro for much cheaper via a Note 10 but many people who like iOS have no interest in switching. This doesn't make them sheep or whatever. I like my IPhones because I know my phone will be supported for 4 to 5 years and most new OS versions contain highly desirable upgrades that are genuinely useful. I just put iOS 13 on my X and Face ID is significantly faster, exactly as Apple promised. It also appears to work even more reliably (and it was already highly reliable before).

Now there are things that Apple deserve to be caned on. Offering base storage of 64 GB for a "pro" device is just BS. On the Watch front, the always-on feature (which eliminates the need to flick my wrist etc during meetings) alone convinced me to upgrade and it was good to see Apple finally giving people the option to pair their watches with bands that they actually want!

Super sad that they stuck to 64GB this year as the baseline. Memory prices have got so cheap. Looks like they're saving all of their goodies for next year where I presume they're going to need a lot of "new stuff" to convince people to switch to USB-C from Lightning (or at least quell the uprising).

All three main players (2D, Spark, Vodafone) have "Pre-orders begin 14/09/19" on their websites which I'm hoping means 11:59pm/12:00am tomorrow (Friday) night.

darn right it sucks, apple is making me wake up 11.59pm tonight to take all my money!

It's the same trick they've used for years.

Keep the headline price lower with "iPhone from $699" adverts knowing that realistically a good proportion of users will need the next model up.

At which point they can charge another $100+ for an extra $30 of flash memory.

The Mac and iPad pro have already gone USB-C. It looks to me that it will be the iPhone 11 buyers that will be upset this time next year when they potentially get stuck will a device that's less than 12 months old and has an out of date connector.

If I had an iPhone 7 or 8 I would probably conclude that it's worth taking a punt and waiting to see if next year's phone had 5G and USB-C before upgrading.

And then use that phone for the following four years!

I've never been an Apple fan given their prices vs specs. But I now accept the Apple premium - they should charge a higher price for their hardware given that they don't make the ongoing margin that Google does from significant data harvesting. But their deliberate under-spec'ing remains a bugbear - particularly storage. I'm not going to pay over $2k for a phone, nor do I want to go to a large phone with lower res screen, or an older model just to pick up reasonable storage at a reasonable price.

So, maybe next year.

I'm still in two minds. My 7+ is still running well and could probably benefit from a battery replacement. But I've been tempted with either a XR from TradeMe or just getting the 11. Part of me thinks the 7+ is still doing the job, and doing it well by all accounts, but its 3 years old now and I'm itching for an upgrade.

My use case is that I'm totally blind and use the camera for tasks like OCR, object recognition and working with sighted assistance to assist with navigating, reading, locating people etc.

If controlling the width of the camera's view and night mode are features specific to the Camera app, then this will have limited utility for me. If third-parties can take control of those things...bring on midnight. I called Apple but they didn't even know what an API was.

Anyone seen anything that might clue me in one way or the other?

Specifically there was an interesting proposition suggested of using the front facing cameras with the back facing cameras to conduct an Journalist/Interview style shot.

Errrm no if somebody is blind they don't generally watch the keynote. Listen then yes perhaps.

He wouldn't have visually seen this feature. But my understanding is that although it will show 4 streams, I don't think it can record all 4 streams at the same time. I am guessing it must be able to do two,k but wonder if both are 4k 60. I do wonder how good this feature is as well, because if you try to adjust one feed on the touch screen it will likely cause a small amount of camera wobble on the other cameras. I do wonder if it is broadcast quality as well, being called pro. I actually thought recording from both the front and rear cameras at the same time was already an option.

I did see that. But I don't take any access to Apple's hardware or software infrastructure as a given. Siri is a case in point. Very locked down unless there are specific SiriKit events Apple allows.

So I wasn't really interested in the third-party app demo with the video from the two cameras, but I am interested in width and night mode. The cost of the phone is too much to just take a punt on it.

A store may let you try it out and demo it. Also it may take time for apps to be rewritten to work. So it maybe a case of waiting to see. Hardly anyone has had the chance to try it out, and even those people at the apple event probably wouldn't have been able to download apps on it it try it out. Based on trying out the accessibility features on apple devices vs android (samsung note 9), and things like the inbult screen reader, Apple devices seem like they are far far better for accessibility. I can't even get the samsung note to select text and read it. Instead you have to enable full screen reading, where it reads absolutely everything displayed on the screen, which is one of the most annoying things ever.

Yes, it will take time for developers to update their apps if it's possible. Someone at Apple knows if it is. I got escalated to Support from Sales, only to be told it's an unreleased product and transferred back to Sales again. A bit unfortunate given that they can see I've purchased the new iPhone every year for the last decade, but there we go.

I suspect when I put my case to the CEO of the household, she'll instruct me to give it a miss this year. Was always a pretty marginal upgrade.
