Fair enough, I am a fanboy of nothing and an expert in nothing. Over the years I have had two macbooks, a toshiba and a dell laptop, HP tablet, Compaq PC, Commodore 64 etal. They have all done what I needed them to at the time I owned them - but I am not a high needs user. I understand that general comments that lend nothing to the conversation are frustrating, but maybe some people just don't like typing. Or thinking. Or justifying.

What can't you do that you should be able to do due to the ram limitations?

no i even jailbroke mine and installed backgrounder a multitasking app but allows all apps to run in true multitasking. I have not noticed it slow down at all... very surprising... it is very snappy

My wife told me after using my ipad a couple of time she is selling her ipod touch cause she prefers an ipad. I said use mine... mind you id probably have to fight to get to use it.. she also has a 15" macbookpro

its seems when you have an ipad in the house it gets used alot by everyone. reviewers have made this comment. A new use we found for it last night was looking up recipes in the kitchen . takes up little room and there are some nice recipe apps or free. VEry handy and convenient.

Buttonmash: Absolutely nothing. The only potential downside is around multitasking when iOS 4.x is released on iPad.

Just jailbreak your ipad and true multitask now. Doesn't slow it down at all so Apples multi switching would be even easier on the unit

I have been looking at that one too but one down side is that it is US so uses US measuring and ingredients.

khull: remote desktop/VNC on the ipad is amazing.

I second that. Takes about 15 seconds from the iPad being alseep to being logged into my server at work using iTap RDP over VPN. Fantastic doesn't do it justice.

The iOS4 upgrade for the iPad should be about November according to the heavys on Apple's Forums.

This should give background services like Skype call notifications the same as you can get on the iPhone 4.0 at the moment.

You'd think a thread like this would be started by someone who had bought one or tried it and was disappointed.

So it seems that the RAM is a non-issue - even with jailbroken multitasking, and that people wanting "oodles of HDD space, Ram and USB ports, an optical drive" they should be looking at a desktop :)

I find optical drives obsolete these days ;) opted out of including one in my latest build.

this is a slap in the face!

Indeed, and topic starter was GIVEN an iPhone 4, and did not want it.
Qualified to comment on why one should NOT buy a product? Perhaps not.

yes i think the fact that the "Hard Drive is in essence an SSD makes a massive difference.
I bought the 32gb iPad and have chucked a ton of stuff on it apps and documents and music and it still is only half full. I thought 32gb might of been pushing to get enough space but i found you sure can cram a ton of stuff on there.

I am not a gamer but I have about 10 decent games on there and find i cant put the thing down. Worth buying just to play.

That's my observation. I do wonder his validity as it doesn't look like he had even give the device a go to give an informed opinion, but merely just drawing "conclusion" from a distance hear-say without true experience with the device.

The first part you got totally right, I use Linux and have done for years on end (since I was 14 or something) - I have also had a iPad for a week for testing a web-app on it. I also did try out some apps on it but it seemed to me it was more of a toy then a actual productivity device, in fact it's actually just a iPod Touch with a super-sized screen and a faster processor.

I did buy a 13" MacBook - It's running Linux like everything else I own. I just see the iPad for the price and specs a waste of money, with that money you could grab a cheap android tablet + still have money left over to go towards a HTC Desire or a 64gb iPod Touch.
