Elpie: Not NZ but these comparisons are good for a laugh (though not if you are using the iOS maps to navigate by): http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/

Back onto the main topic, though....

Am I correct that iOS maps does not offer auto-reroute on the iPhone 4?

Auto-reroute works well on my new iPad, but my iPhone 4 doesn't seem to reroute if I go off-course?

Any can confirm? No re-route on iPhone 4? Or am I just not using it properly?

It does reroute.  It will often re-route just to try and get you back on the stupid suggestion it previously gave you, but eventually it works out what you're doing/

On an iPhone 4????

Are you sure???

I know it reroutes on a 4S....but I have yet to see it reroute on my iPhone 4.

Maybe I'm not using it right?

littleheaven: I've upgraded my phone for comedy value, since I never used the maps on it anyway, but I'm kinda glad at this point that my 1st gen iPad won't run iOS6 ;o)

I actually wonder why ios6 doesn't work on he ipad 1, since it has a faster processor than the 3gs, and the same processor as the iphone 4 and ipod touch 4

I think IOS6 is quite an improvement over ios5, especially the stores and user interface fixes. But I have noticed a bit of lag with the ipad2. Also I think there will eventually be maps and youtube for the ipad released by google, unless apple block them.

Does this mean that iOS is going to get fragmented?

I think it has more to selling newer ipads and keeping buyers of newer ones happy. I think the reason why the ipad 1 doesn't support ios6 is because ios6 will be the last idate for the ipad2. If the ipad 1 and 2 both end on ios6, people with the ipad 2 will feel a bit ripped off.
The thing is that the new ipad mini that is expected to be released, is expected to have the exact same specs as the ipad 2, just minified and perhaps with siri and a better camera. But this will have ios6 as default, and buyers of it will expect to be able to upgrade to ios7 and perhaps 8 in the future. I expect this will mean that future IOS versions may not be as demanding on the power of the chip, as the A5 chip(which is being used in the (ipod touch) is now getting close to a couple of years old.

isn't it Apples prerogative to allow devices to update to a certain level then discontinue support?

Would Apple be a smart company if they didn't give you an incentive to upgrade to the latest hardware?

I have a Windows 7 laptop, I have no automatic rights to upgrade to Windows 8 for free.

Don't get me wrong I want all the iOS6 features on my Iphone4 and Ipad1 but I can't get them so I have to decide, do I upgrade the hardware or am I happy to keep the current devices (which perform well) with their current system. Free upgrades are actually a privilege not a right.

That all said if the device stopped working I would expect a fix/patch to be made available free of charge.

This morning I searched for an address on my iPhone and it found it fine, but I was having trouble visualising the location on the small screen so I decided to look it up on my iPad.

I then looked up exactly the same address on my iPad and it couldn't find it! It tried to suggest a similar address in the United States, but no amount of fumbling around could convince it that the address I was looking for exists in Wellington. Bloody hopeless.

Ha just came to Napier, maps are pretty bad here, shops are located in the middle of roads and even one authorised apple reseller is located in the wrong place on the map. Lucky I know this place like the back of my hand.

I've used Apples navigation maps on the iPhone 5 around Auckland and as long as you input an address it seems to work really well. POI and business names are no good though.

I use this workaround to find places and it works quite well.

Use Foursquare, Localscope, Aroundme etc to find where you want to go and hit navigate and choose maps to open maps app.
