No it is the technology in the phone that dictates the speed not the SIM card. To get faster speed you will need a new iphone.

But he is talking abou the technology in the phone. He wants to put his SIM into a 3G phone - will he get 3G speeds on that 3G phone?

As you go on merry way of unlocking the APN to access data from your sim card, note that you cannot SWITCH OFF data from the iPhone. Even if you switch off the 3G slider it will resort to GPRS/EDGE (where available).

I can see it now, a number of users thinking they are not connected to Internet yet consuming data at extraordinarily high casual rates!!! Maybe this is why having a different APN as default is a protection for such users. Certainly is a limitation of the device to not be able to shut that gate.

When overseas, the disable roaming will switch off data. Otherwise you can use the profile tool to change the APN to something invalid. Therefore if the phone attempts to contact the network it will fail. Maybe create a profile with custom APN of 'DUMMY' and switch to that profile when you want to be 100% that you will not be using data from your sim.

The best solution will be for VFNZ to start to rollout better dataplans with higher volumes and lower charges.

Apologies for labouring this point but it will affect my buying decision in the short term (if there is any stock left)

I take my existing sim card which is already giving me access to data via GPRS and pop it into a 3G iPhone, then using the APN fix

I am able to get 3G data speeds on my existing data plan.

My existing sim card has 256k (take it this is memory) written on it but not 3G. Unlike another sim card i have seen that has 3G in the vodafone logo.

Sackmaster, it would be worth checking with VF if your card is 3G capable. When I got my NZ sim I made sure it was 3G, however in AUS, when I first purchased a 3G capable smartphone a couple of years ago, they had to upgrade my existing SIM card. BTW my VFNZ SIM has 3G and 128k printed on it. (storage size)

Hi sackmaster,

For the extra $20 or so I would highly recommend just upgrading your Sim.

I received my iPhone 3G yesterday 24 hours after ordering it online.

I went to unlockit.co.nz on wifi, turned the wifi off and it worked perfectly. I'm on Super Prepay. I then figured out a more permanent solution to my not wanting to use lots of data - read up.

I did get 3G speeds sometimes, but the 3G reception was very low in my area. If the 3G icon was displaying, the transfers were very fast. On GPRS it was slower, but still ok to sites designed for mobie.

The charges were terrible - 300k ~= $3 but hey, we know that will be fixed at the end of the month.

I will do a step-by-stp here tonight.

a 256K SIM is fine for 3G and or use in a iPhone 3G

I find it incredible that VF have convinced people to PAY MONEY to purchase SIM cards from them so they can access the network and pay them more

Whatever happened to the days when SIMs were free? I've never paid for one and think I would have a hard job justifying paying for one, considering you bloody need it to be on their network in the first place.

A short message to let people know that the website is going well. Its only been 2-3 days up and running and I'm getting 500+ people a day connecting to it (And its going up). with about (I estimate about 150 people have changed their APN)

If anyone wants to donate it might help me actually buy a 3G iPhone Myself :-) (I've already had a couple of small ones today)

The documentation says If I don't put the key into for the username/password in the iphone should ask you for them but due to this not working I have just made them blank at the moment.

If I add into the form asking for the username/password I can add them to the XML file, but would you trust a website asking for this? Also I haven't worked out the the way they use for the password conversion.

Yeah, I've seen the password encryption (from a small trial of the Enterprise Web Config), but this carrier bundle generator generates the .bundle file which is used in the iPhone, doesn't encrypt the password for the APN. (I'm not sure if this works for the iPhone 3G though)
