That page now has no mention of HomePods :-(

But - I have decided to sell my 2 white mini's (I brought this before the group-buy) - I was going post in the FS section but I know a lot of people are reading this thread, so PM me in your interested.  $360 the pair + shipping.  Still have original boxes, non-smoking home, as new condition, or pickup in Auckland.

Any reason why you are selling?

I have brought a full sized HomePod (being shipped from AU, with another planned) in space grey, love the HomePod concept, just want to get better sound, especially Atmos from my Apple TV 4K :-)

My brother in-law bought a Bose 500 speaker just before lockdown to replace the JVC iPod unit in the garage. The salesman said it would work from his iMac due to AirPlay. The speaker is 100% controlled from a mobile phone, in his case an Oppo. It keeps dropping off the Home WiFi network and I have to travel from Tauranga to Cambridge to re connect it all and show him, once again what to do. NOW he is totally a Techno Luddite. He even has difficulty using the Android QR scan. He can just work his iMac email and photo's app. Bose does not bring out an iMac app for this product.

My feeling is he should sell the Bose and get an Apple HomePod which he can most certainly control from his iMac by just calling: Music > Playlist > Play > AirPlay.

My question is: How do you buy and import from Aussie ?? Do you get a friend in Aussie to do it etc ??

If ?? I can get him down this route, I will put the Bose up for sale in geekzone.

Have you established why the Bose speaker is dropping off the network? If it's due to poor wifi reception in the garage then replacing it with an alternative product isn't going to help you.

All other Wifi devices have no problem even though we are going through 5 plaster board internal walls. The only problem I can think off that may cause interference is he has lots of DIY power tools; saw bench, band saw, electric sanding wheels rig, TIG welder etc and most are 40 to 50 years.

The whole initial setup procedure for this Bose Speaker

  • Setup your speaker in the office next to your iMac
  • Plug in to mains
  • On the speaker, press and hold the AUX button and the Play/Pause button until the light bar glows amber. This may take 30 to 45 sec’s as the iMac and the speaker chat to each other.
  • On your iMac: System Preferences > Network and Select Bose Home Speaker 500
  • OR if it is not there try this:
  • Press and hold Play/Pause and the Bluetooth button for 5 seconds until the white light fills to the centre, pulses twice then fades to black. This may take 30 to 45 sec’s as the iMac and the speaker chat to each other.
  • System Preferences > Bluetooth and Select Bose Home Speaker 500
  • Now to check that it is connected
  • System Preferences > Speaker and Bose Home Speaker 500 should be listed
  • NEXT
  • Open up the Mac Music app and select a song to play and press play
  • As per the below picture in the Music Tool bar, click on the blue pyramid type circle and select Bose Home Speaker 500 by clicking in the box to the right and a tick should appear.
  • The slider is the volume control via Music
  • Now take the speaker back out to the garage and plug in and turn on
  • If it does not reconnect try:
  • Press and hold Play/Pause and the Bluetooth button for 5 seconds until the white light fills to the centre, pulses twice then fades to black. This may take 30 to 45 sec’s as the iMac and the speaker chat to each other.

(note: he turns everything off and unplugs when not in use within the garage)

As I previously said he is a techno Luddite and he is also 86 years. So I would prefer a speaker that "Just Works". Turn on speaker in garage, then select speaker from AirPlay symbol in Music, select playlist and play via iMac Music. Simple.

@FineWine yes it would be much easier to use a HomePod mini, especially if your BiL is a technological Luddite. The issue I see is that he's using an Oppo, an Android phone. This requires some technical understanding to use the workarounds so they work with AirPlay. It would probably be easier to transition him to an iPhone, much better for your sanity!!

Then it's as easy as selecting and it works (that's kinda the Apple way)

edit: added link to android airplay workaround

@finewine

How far away from the office is the garage? Your instructions suggest you're connecting via bluetooth which unlike wifi has a much shorter range.

Also, if he's turning off devices when not in use it's possible that the the iMac Music app will need to be pointed at the speaker on every reboot.

100% agree a HomePod mini will be a better option. I *think* the iMac will stay connected to it as a default output too

I imported a pair of HomePod minis from Australia.

Completely underwhelmed by them.

And then tonight I thought I would play some music that was on YouTube (using Safari) and I find that you can not output stereo sound this way, the stereo pair only works with a few Apple Apps.

I mean WHAT ????

HOW did this product get released in this state ?

No wonder they are not sold here in NZ, people would be returning them under the CGA because they are defective.

See if you can get the HomePod beta profile on to them and it’ll upgrade to 14.5 beta (or wait a week or two for the normal release), you can then set them as airplay source. I’ve just tested it on Mac, iPad and iPhone and successfully played YouTube through safari on them 👍🏻

Depends on what you expect I guess.

The speakers are not sold as Mac speakers, and don't work as a stereo pair for that. But they work nicely as stereo speakers from any iOS device (At least ones that support Airplay 2).

Hopefully there will be support for sending audio from Macs to the speakers as stereo pairs some time in the future.

Have gotten a pair of Minis and I think they sounded surprisingly good for the size of them.

Also got a new Homepod so I have a stereo pair of those in the house as well. The Minis are in the office, the big Homepods are in the living room. Love playing music to both and moving between the office and the livingroom.

Got the Minis from MWave, and got the Homepod from Apple.com.au and used a forwarder. Got the Minis a lot quicker and would buy from MWave again.

I'm on the same setup now, did you use a commercial forwarder that you can recommend?
