Another use for my website. People wanting to turn OFF their Data. There is no way on the iPhone to actually turn OFF all Data (only 3G, not GPRS) so changing the APN to something completely fake will turn off the data.

Imagine if you are in a wifi hotspot and using it and you lose wifi and you don't notice. It then changes to 3G(or if you turn that off or not available) or GPRS and....... you do lots of data.

I've had few people with 3G iphones in other countries use my website who have had the above problem.

Firstly, good job, and secondly, im probably far from the ball but does this make it at all possible to buy an iphone, use the casual data plan and then move to telecom once they release their new network?in end making it no different from one that was purchased from telecom.

It's impossible to tell right now. In theory yes, because Vodafone sells the iPhone unlocked, and because Apple have a tool to change the APN you should be able to move to Telecom. You would need to buy the iPhone without a plan obviously. However this working depends on what Telecom do, and what Vodafone / Apple might do in future. Being telco's they are likely to screw it up so don't hold your breath.

Thanks for the site - I've found it very useful. I have a sim provided by work. On my previous phone I used to browse the net, get email, use maps, etc, all at casual rates. Work never seemed to mind. When I got my 3G iPhone this all ground to a halt. All fixed now which is great.

Could I suggest you add a further option to your site...

Allow data on any sim >
Set custom APN >
Prevent data access >

...which would set a fake APN?

Thanks so much for this tool!

I'm using an iPhone 1.0, with 2.0 FW unlocked using Pwnage Tool 2.0. I couldn't access data over GPRS at all with my regular VF SIM as 2.0 has removed the option to edit APN in System Prefs on the iPhone - but was able to access this tool via Wifi, change the APN and am now happily back to my GPRS email.

Good thing too - as the only way I had it working before was by restoring the iPhone from a 1.1.4 FW backup in iTunes after going to 2.0 - which seems to create all sorts of problems. Setting the 2.0 phone up as a new phone rather than restoring from backup is definitely the way to go for all you upgraders. But that's a topic for another thread ... :)

hi all,

can anyone be able to help me answer this question please....?

can you use the new apn address as it is discussed in this thread (www.vodafone.net.nz) and not the iphone one... would this allow the phone to be used in the new casual $10 data plan that vodafone is going to release on 27th of this month? can anyone please help me answer this please....
cos i am trying to just buy the phone outright and use it on my current you choose plan as i have wifi connections at home and at work.. and will only rely on data as emergency on the go....

oh and lastly... are the phones that vodafone is selling actually unlocked for other networks? ie... going overseas soon..and would it work by just getting a sim card and using it?

Yes the whole of this thread is about how you can modify your default settings to allow you to use the non-iphone APN. That will enable you to use the new casual plan from the 27th yes.

Lennon I'm going to try and get my hands on a phone maybe tomorrow or Monday. Did you have any trouble activating your iPhone when you had your prepaid sim card in it?

I am over in Aussie on a break
I updated my Iphone 1.0 1.1.4 to 2.0 software and now no data connection
I assume this is cause the APN info is no longer valid with the 2.0 update.
I did Jailbreak and activate the phone using pwnage 2.01
So what am I to do while I am here for the next week I cant access my emails or web pages if I have too.
I suspect my only option is to go to a wifi hotspot to do this?
If I do should I go to the www.inlockit.co.nz website or whatever the correct address on my iPhone and get the page to change my APN?
I assume there is no other way to do this as there is no setting to change manually and without a network connection I cant use cyder to grab something like bos preferences which i asume will allow manual adjustments of this setting like it did with 1.1.4
I only have access currently to an Optus USB dongle which uses the cellphone network to get internet on my laptop
not bad... 5gb for 39.95 per month
iPhones are sure alot cheaper over here too!

I presume you have a Gen 1 phone upgraded to 1.2 software with a NZ Vodafone Sim Card in it?. WHen this happens (with a NZ Phone) the APN is changed to www.iphone-vodafone.co.nz and the settings are hidden.

I'm not 100% how roaming works exactly (the same APN works I guess, so you can just go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz (say on your computer if you have it and download the www.vodafone.net.nz APN file and sync with your computer so its in your email on your iphone and run it from there).

Or as you said find a wifi net and do it from there.

is there a way to to sync or get a file on 2.0 as it stands WITHOUT a wifi or data connection??
I am currently "in the sticks" so going to find a wifi hotspot is most unlikely
there isnt an app from the app store that allows someone to dump a file on the 2.0 software and then run it?
