Update finally from Spark, I am now on back order as they have now dated my purchase on the 18th rather than the 14th. Now the waiting game ...

My iPhone 17 Pro Max arrived this morning and have had it in the background migrating data across - Signal has taken 4 hours.

Was really impressed when powered on it set up my Spark eSim without me having to scan a QR code or anything so looks like that process has become way more seamless!

Yes, finally!

Both my work and personal One NZ eSIM also offered to transfer during the setup process and worked perfectly first time.

Yeah I was expecting the eSim transfer process to suck but it was all very straight forward for me on One

eSIM setup process was flawless, really impressive.
I ordered my 17 air from spark with a new connection, intending to port over soon. I hadn’t received the eSIM by email yet and was told it’d go out once the phone was shipped. Phone arrived and still no eSIM email - expecting id need to go to a spark store.
during the phones setup (as a new phone without restoring a backup), as soon as I connected to wifi it downloaded a Spark eSIM, activated it and had connectivity in 15-20seconds. Zero logon or input of any account details - super slick.

then it must’ve detected the OneNZ eSIM on my old iPhone and offered to transfer it, which I did. Again no input of any account details and the transfer took seconds.

And to really top it off - I went to spark after work anyway as I needed an account number to register the app. Mentioned I wanted it so I could activate my Apple Watch eSIM - he grabbed the EID of the watch and said the eSIM will download automatically the next time I’m on wifi. It didn’t even need that - about 10min later it was active.
I guess they used the EID to push an eSIM via apple? felt very much like the old days where you’d provide Telecom the (ESN?) of your CDMA phone and they’d activate it for you that way, no SIM.

It's one of the features that Apple has been pushing out gradually called eSIM Carrier Activation. Regarding the watch case, that's interesting because the documentation wording has made it sound like it was limited to devices sold by that carrier, so a little surprising Spark were able to push it to a watch that had presumably been activated and in use prior.

I noticed in some of the carrier bundle change summaries that it was pointed out that some of the US carriers have also added support for migrating eSIMs between iOS and Android. Apple certainly are making some good progress on pushing eSIM usability.

thanks - I wasn’t sure if it was on Apples side or changes from the carrier, but either way was the first time it required no fannying about to transfer them, so I was pleased!

Much as I enjoyed getting my "surprise" new phone from One today, the more I think on it, the more irked I am by the "how" (yeah first world problems)

I still do not have any follow up from One confirming shipping or tracking (just the "We have your order and will mail you when shipped) and the courier did not take my signature - unlike my wife's DHL order directly from Apple which also arrived today.

The phone could have been delivered incorrectly or stolen somewhere in the chain and I had no idea it even existed, let alone that it was sent and never arrived - and there would have been little evidence either way.

A significant logistics SNAFU and not a one off either, given Benjip had exactly the same experience!

Hope they get it sorted ASAP.

(probably should post this on the One forum as well...)

Super late, but where would the best place be to order online from currently?

Looks like Noel Leeming has plenty of stock of the 17 Pro (in Auckland at least), so I'd just check whichever retailer near you has live stock levels on their website.

Apologies I should have clarified, I would like to buy a base model 17. They all say "on special order" there. Ordering from a place that basically says "yeah we'll get it in when we get it" kind of puts me off a little.

You can’t go wrong buying directly from Apple.
