Telecom set for August launch of Micro-SIMs

From early August, Telecom will launch its own Micro-SIM cards, making it even easier for XT customers to use the latest Smartphone and notebook devices.

New mobile devices are using a smaller variation of the SIM cards found on current cellphones, and are known as a Micro-SIM.

Telecom spokesperson Paul Taylor says there is a demand for Micro-SIMs from XT customers.

“Our release of Micro-SIMs ensures that our customers can continue to use the country’s best mobile network on all current and future devices”.

Mr Taylor said that XT provides a compelling mobile broadband solution for New Zealanders, and Gen-i is seeing strong demand from clients keen to take advantage of Gen-i’s mobility solutions to add value to their businesses.  As well as the addition of Micro-SIMs, there is also the 30 day risk-free trial and turbo charged speeds on the upgraded XT Network.

Telecom XT Micro-SIMs will be available from Telecom stores and dealers from early August. Business customers should contact their Gen-i client manager.

Micro-SIMs will be the same price as Telecom New Zealand standard SIMs:

Prepaid: $29.95
Postpaid: $19.95

I still believe this is the most cost effective option if you've got a mate (or 6) who you can go in with:

~$42NZD including freight.

2degrees is slowest due to only having EDGE. 3G will be available at some point in the future. Vodafone and Telecom have similar networks and the speed varies based on location, but I think Telecom's slightly in the lead.

Have emailed 2degrees to see when/if they are going to provide these as well - I am with them with my iPhone 3G, ported from VF.  Prepared to put up with the slow data at the moment as Vodafone prepay was costing me an arm and a leg, even with only using the $1 a day data.  Will report what they say...

I couldn't wait, so I hacked a v1 Telecom SIM down to MicroSIM size and jammed it in my iPad. w00t

My XT MicroSIM, you can see the 'new' rounded stylising of the SIM card :)

I was worried the SIM would short out, but it seems fine.

Not bad

Telecom is fastest, Vodafone has a nasty habit of dropping back to 2G coverage. :(

wait a few weeks, the ipad is coming to NZ in july (according to apple.co,nz/ipad) and if you convert the AUS prices to NZD, waiting a couple of weeks would save you around $400

Yeah $1600 seems a bit steep! Going by aussie prices should be around $1200 for the one with the bigger GB's hopefully... any more and i'll wait till someones going to aussie... Just so impatient! I want NOW.

Go to google and search for 'ipad site:nz' and click the 'news' link. I figure someones got to post an announcement about it!

I was dead set on an iphone 4, ready to sell the spare kidney and all, but i'm back into the ipad again. Figure for someone with 45 mins each way on the bus ipad's the better option.
