I'm after an airport express to use as an airplay reciever. It'll be hardwired so I don't care about which protocol. I'd like to pay around $50 if possible.

I am pretty sure that as an airplay receiver it will only work wirelessly. The ethernet connection is used solely for its use as an access point.

Question: I have a third-party 802.11b/g/n wireless access point. I want to put AirPort Express next to my home theater and stream iTunes to it. Can AirPort Express join the third-party network?
Answer: Yes. AirPort Express can join a third-party network in client mode, or if it is connected via Ethernet to a LAN port on the non-Apple wireless access point.

Other option is get a Raspberry Pi and case. That will be around your budget.

You can run XBMC on it which act as an AirPlay reciever. That's what I use with my home theatre.

I'm running a raspberry pi at the moment but the analogue audio is rubbish, even with a USB sound card. I need the analogue output as it's driving zone 2 out on the deck.

The raspberry pi doesn't have a proper DAC so there's a certain amount of distortion and artefacts that come through. I was hoping a USB sound card may help but TBH it's still not great (at least with the cheap card I'm using). HDMI audio is fine, it's just analogue that's not to flash.
