My son is starting intermediate school. School bus will take 1h as it is the last stop on the trip, so that is 2h per day wasted. Poorly designed public bus route means he needs to take 2 buses and takes a bit over 30 minutes. It is only 6km away with a hill only close to our home, so I'm thinking electric scooter. We could drop him off at/near school, but that means driving 15km to work in traffic instead of 3km as it is in the opposite direction. The hill goes down to our home so if he runs out of charge he can just coast the last km or so. I don't care if batteries are dead, I'll modify it anyway to get the range/performance. We're in East Auckland, please PM me if you have something you want to get rid of. Cash is a bit tight as it is start of the year with 2 kids starting 2 new schools and both need uniform/tablet/stationary (what is the tablet for then?), but at work I can make my own battery pack/charger.

Not sure how big your kid is but we got our boys (7 & 9 but tall) electric scooters from kmart the other day for $119.

They are pretty decent with 2 x 12V batteries. Manual says it will do around 17km on a charge. Weight limit is '70kgs' but I was so impressed with the scooter I got myself one (I'm over 110kgs btw). I had no problem scooting around our local school basketball court.

You probably get what you pay for but these scooters comes with a repair guide and an extra drive belt.

From memory the drive belt isn't something Engineering or automotive places carry on the shelves but I think they can be modified to take a standard size cogged belt.

The batteries I think are easily replaced and up specced

May I ask why you haven't considered a regular bike?

I cycle 8 km into work each day and it takes just over 20 minutes.

Interesting. The bottom of the deck looks similar to the kmart ones we bought. Ours don't fold and the material isn't aluminum like the one above. Specs are similar.

Thanks guys, useful info/links, I might buy a new one and upgrade the battery when it dies or if the range is not enough. The other day we cycled together and got most of the way, but there are a few dangerous places and steep hill where I do not want my 11-year-old to cycle by himself. Also he is going to Elim where they always have to be neat and tidy, so not sure it would be acceptable when he gets to school sweaty.

As for the batteries, I've got access to 5Ah LiFePO4 cells and make my own battery packs which is half the weight but gives double the run time, reason being that gel cells have terrible efficiency when discharged in less than an hour (capacity is actually rated over 20h discharge). Also it is a bad idea to leave it at school half discharged all day and then deep discharge it going back home.

The other day I've built a battery pack for an Enviromower and it runs amazingly well, will post about it when I've done the first cut of our WoolGro lawn. Also about the cordless phone which was upgraded to a single LiFePO4 AAA cell about 6 months ago. Watch this space...
