My trusty i3 plex server is struggling with transcoding bigger files. I'd be keen for a processor upgrade if anyone's got a cheapy I could buy.

This has been the best PC I've ever owned - it's run faultlessly for about 5 or 6 years. It's just starting to struggle with transcoding large 1080p files.

Bump. Alternatively I'd be interested in a motherboard / cpu combo if anyone wants to move one on. Just needs to support DDR3 RAM.

If you can find a motherboard that supports the chip, I can pretty much give you my i7-3820, provided you send me some appropriate materials to pack it into so it reaches you safely.

Thanks for the offer but I'd need a motherboard to match. Looking online it appears that all the motherboards for that socket need ddr4 and at that point I'd probably look at a whole new machine.

Thanks for the offer I do appreciate it.

Nope, that CPU will work with DDR3 Memory for sure - and if OP doesn't want it, I'll happily throw some bones your way for it, because I've been looking for an excuse to build an unRAID setup, and having one of those processors would definitely fit the bill.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Go for it - the cpu may work with ddr3 but find a motherboard that supports it is a bit harder.
