G5 / G5S is a good choice, a little over your limit. I've also heard the Vodafone Smart range is really good value for money.

Xiaomi Mi A1 is probably the best bet - https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=4479157

Well spec'd, it's an Android One device so it will get timely updates for quite a while and it has been getting good reviews.

This looks good yes, but becareful of warranty, otherwise seems like a better deal than the Motorola G5s

Also doesnt cover the NZ 4G data bands properly - will still work ok - but could use the 3G network more often.

That would be my first pick available for $299 almost anywhere. 24 month warranty. I'd go warehouse or ws for the sensible return policy. Are you spark/voda/2deg?

Nokia 6 is $277 at JB HiFi at the moment

https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/nokia/nokia-6-silver/337672/

Doesnt appear to be locked to any network.

Its in run-out as there is the Nokia 6 2018 coming out very soon.

Was around $450 at launch time around 6 months ago.
