I'm in need of a replacement battery for a family members Macbook Pro (Mid 2012 Retina 15" A1398 ) as it's no longer holding a charge.

I know there's a couple of Apple techs on here who will hopefully be able to point me in the right direction.

Two options, you can buy an OEM battery off eBay do it yourself watching youtube/ifixit , roughly will cost $100, Wouldn't recommend this though because of the risk and quality of the battery.

Second option is to head to an authorised apple service provider and get it done properly for around $500. They do not replace the battery, the whole top case assembly is replaced, so you get a new battery, keyboard trackpad and new enclosure.

There will be a very good change that any batt sent from China will get confiscated/rejected at the Ch border.
Ive had that happen several times.
Ive even had goods rejected at the Ch border as they believed there MIGHT have been AA batts in it (there wasnt)
Improperly labeled packages containing Batts can also be confiscated & destroyed by NZ customs. Thats rare , but does happen.

roll the dice, take your chances .

There are plenty of A1417 batteries on trademe, most with 12 months warranties which is about as good as it gets. They come with the screwdrivers to remove the little tri-wing or whatever it is screw and will take you about 5 mins probably.

I haven't done this exact model but plenty of other 15" and 13" MBP and have never had an issue.

I'd say take a punt on a $100 unless you have $500 burning a hole in your pocket that your keen to get rid of. There's a plethora of info on the web to help you with the task also.

I replaced the battery in my 2013 Air with an aliexpress battery just over 2 years ago with zero issues and its still my main driver.

IIRC the Retina MBP's have the Battery glued to the top case. When Apple replace the battery, they replace the whole top case assembly, so it may not be a 5 min job to replace.

There seems to be a few 'Apple Service Centres' here with GZ accounts lol..

JM2CW, based on plenty of battery replacements in plenty of MBP's and a also helluva lot more messing round with these critters is this: order from anywhere but an Apple Service Centre, you have almost zero chance of anything untoward happening, and they are not hard to change as per the google search videos.. you won't get a new top case but who cares, you don't need one & this will be 4-6x cheaper... Sure, it's not a 5 minute job, well not with your model sadly but it's not exactly rocket science either !

Those glued in blasted MBP cells... nothing more annoying than hard soldered RAM sticks pretty much.. dunno if even ½ the evolutionary leaps are things we want frankly..

Roll on another top end modular MBP, till then I stick to a late 2012 High Res Matt Screen MBP 15" max'd thru-out

Thanks, Didn't realize apple doesn't replace just the battery in this model so will defiantly give it a try myself.

If you are into fishing or kiting, you will have some nylon/kevlar braid around, use that & bit of a sawing/cutting motion, easy as but any small thin 'string' will do... floss even (wrap whatever you use around bits of broken chopstick so you don't cut yourself).
