What sort of specs does vortexbox need? I’ve got an old P4 thinkpad, but it’s getting ancient maybe 384mb ram. Am in Tauranga

I got a HP Elitebook here which I was given. It boots up fine but I don't have any passwords for it. Comes with a power adaptor.

The E key and the Enter key are missing from it.

(I'm in Palmy North.)

Hard Drive space

VortexBox is designed to run on a dedicated box. It uses up about 6 GB for itself and a little more than a 1/3 of a GB for each album ripped. So a 500GB hard drive could hold about 1400 CD worth of music.

CPU

Any 500MHz P4 or faster i686 class processor should work well. VortexBox will not load on Via C5 or any other i586 type processor. The new Intel Atom works well.

Memory

256k RAM is required. With 512K you can stream to several machines.

CDROM

You should use a good IDE or SATA CD or DVD burner. Burners have better laser posissioning and you will get better quality rips.

Player

VortexBox runs SqueezeCenter from SlimDevices so and SlimDevices player such as SqueezeBox or SqueezeBoom will work well. You can also use almost any other type of player including ipod touch, xbox 360, iTunes, windows media player, etc.

*emerges from dark recesses covered in dust & spiderwebs*

Would an IBM Thinkpad T60 be powerful enough? It's Centrino Duo 1.66GHz with a whole 1GB RAM & 60GB SATA HDD. It's in really good condition, especially considering the build date of 07/04.

I figure it's either going to you or MOTAT.

Found a fully functional Acer Aspire 5542G (with a spare 5542 without the G, but they look exactly the same, that I can'r get a screen to work on) that has an Athlon M320 & 2Gb ram and no HDD that you can have for $20

Home all day  at this stage if you want to pop down to Cherrywood area and grab it.

Actually... forget the $20, just bring me a decent Large flat white coffee and its yours!

I'm actually thinking a Thinclient may be good for this task - low powered, and can be purchased for nix. Many have hard drive bays so you can add a standard 2.5" disk. I've done something similar in the past (years ago) with Linux and a thin client for a bar in Nelson which I think is still actually in action today...

Take a look at this one for example: https://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/servers/server-components/listing-1886841935.htm
