timbosan: Why use FTP? Surely that's what sFTP is for (as in secure-FTP)? If you don't want your data being monitored having the stream SSH encrypted is the solution.

yea kind of defeats the purpose using just plain FTP.

I VPN in to my seed box and then use SFTP to pull down the files. Probably over the top but meh, not much more effort and is dead secure.

sftp stands for ssh file transfer protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSH_File_Transfer_Protocol) essentially ftp over ssh, yes, but it isnt ftp over ssh at all but rather a different protocol all together.

secure ftp is actually FTPS FYI..

really need to consider, what your using a seedbox for, is it purely ratios? if so clearly you dont care about secure.. avoid laws? in which case, it needs to be asked, how secure are you with providing the details to you provider? how much should a provider need?

theres very little providers out there who offer to know you purely by an email and a screen name, the providers that do offer that, that is all they are interested in.

in that case, they should have the system all ready for you, as secure as you would expect.. force everything over SSL.

considering your very likely to be threading your downloads, doing multiples at once to take more advantage of your available bandwidth, why would you want to pump that all down a single ssh thread?

Oh so true! I use a web interface over HTTPS then use SFTP. Certainly over the top as you note its fully secure (well except for a raid on the hosting provider ;-) )

The point I was making is not a matter of sftp or ftp regardless of your transfer from your seedbox it's being logged & able to be seen by those with the right tools at their disposal. Whether or not anyone is actually going to bother is another matter.

Current 3 strikes copyright laws do not look for ftp transfer of any type they look at things like bit torrent & their transfer medium. So it's not a big deal if you use a seedbox you'll bypass that law for now (if doing illegal stuff) if you're being looked at by other agencies for whatever reasons then it's not going to keep you safe.

Do I feel secure that I am a using a seedbox yes I feel a lot more secure do I believe I'm 100 % not able to be tracked not at all lol. Do I care either way no if doing illegal things & you get caught sucks to be you. If that person was /is me then sucks to be me too.

in terms of services ild suggest ..

Windows 7 seedbox, didn't know these existed, mind you unsure how well it runs with 750MB DDR3.

I have no idea either lol I'm just using their sb-50 plan at £5.50pm 240ish gig storage and have no problems with it speeds perfect for my current needs. I also use a private tracker so no other worries.

Windows 7 seedbox, didn't know these existed, mind you unsure how well it runs with 750MB DDR3.

seems like an odd choice, ild much rather go *nix and assign more memory to the cache myself..

Running a win7 server would perfect for me as I could run a whole lot of server software out of the box without needing any commandline skills. Could potentially stream media directly from the SB with apps I familiar with such as Plex although realistically the SB would be severely inadequate in terms of processing power and ram.

its a question of what your trying to achieve with the box really.. hard disks only spin so fast, data can only read and write so fast.. random IOs (inwhich larger counts would cause) will slow thoses speads even more.

in terms of streaming, IO waits and single tcp streams will be your biggest issue there.

plex does run pretty well on linux (although i dont personally use it, support it alot.)

its kinda a question of how intensive you expect your machine to be.. remembering virtual memory will slow you down a damsight more than anything else too.

once setup, your likely to be purely using the services rather than having to get in there and lay down the commands.. in the case something is needed, many turn to VNC or webmin where possible to do what they want without touching that dreaded terminal..

at the end of the day, it is up to your preference and expectations..

Looking at $25 for a 500gb share. Sharing a 100mbit connection with me. its set up with RAID 1. So 2x1tb drives.
I could change the raid to allow more space. But bit sceptical about if a drive dies it being a pain in the ass.

It will be set up with a ssh login so you can restart rtorrent if it dies.

FTP access or I'm looking at implementing HTTPS index. If you wanna install plex or other services that's fine. I can throw on sudo rights if it requires it.

The server itself is grunty enough for torrents. I'm running plex on top as well to stream cos I can and it doesn't seem to care.PM me if keen on a share.

I might have more up for grabs if more people are interested.

I could be keen once my current boxes month runs out. I really just want something to run Plex that's fairly easy to setup and fast.

Fast in what regards??? Fast in putting things onto the seedbox or fast at transferring things from your seedbox to your pc? As I'd think fast to your pc is pretty much all about what internet connection you are paying for.
