Hi Dan, If Spesh isn't interested in shipping down to welly I wouldn't checking it out to see how big the case is. Ii'm on the look out for a HTPC

What games is he playing?
Sit on trademe for a bit, There was a user offering me an I7 http://ark.intel.com/products/65524/Intel-Core-i7-3770S-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz (For a bloody good price with 4GB of DDR3 1600, I PM''d them to see if its still available without name dropping. Go grab a board that support permanent turbo clocking or what ever its called so it doesnt throttle back and you have a 3770 that goes well.
He's not playing anything particularly testing, a couple of low end steam games (house war or something) terarria, but wants to play some old school 1st person shooters. (think UT3/ BFBC2 type games)
I've had a look at the 1155 gen3 gear there seems to be a number of the CPUs around for really good money but not as many motherboards any of the MBs i've seen have been pretty pricey. (Hence the looking at sandy bridge era instead)
To be honest anything over an i3 2100 would probably do :)
Doesn't Ivy bridge and Sandy bridge share the same chipset? I would be suggesting 8GB RAM with a quad core/dual to be honest and not to get a CPU that has worse performance than a 6th gen I3.
Edit: I didnt press submit for ages.. Avoid thin clients please, You want it to be as modular and universal as possible for the future ;)
Same socket, some overlap in chipsets, there's a pile of Q67 and H61 boards on trademe which dont support ivybridge procs. The rest arent so common.
I have a sandy bridge pentium G620 if you want it.
I can do the following:
Intel Core i5 2400s - $65
4GB Ram - $45 per stick, have 4 at DDR3 1333
plus the full PC with Core i7 3770, Radeon 270x and Windows 7 retail for somewhere around $600.
Cpu and memory would require shipping to be added, which would be tracked but could probably send in one package... PM me if you want to take it further.

Thanks for the offer, but its a bit rich for my blood. there are currently two i5-2400 (non s) for $60 on trademe at the moment which is what i've been looking at
I have an i5-3550 quad core, Intel DQ77 motherboard and 8GB RAM in a desktop style case (so could only fit half height graphics card). It has a 500 GB hard drive and supposedly legit Windows 10 (the free upgrade from Windows 7, had already been done when I bought it). Yours for $200 + shipping if you want.
hey im based in welly and have stuff you can have for super cheap - feel free to email me or something and i'll send info through when i get home. from memory its like a quad core amd , mobo , heatsink (maybe) and ram ... then i got a spare laptop you can have the hdd frm or something
I don't expect much maybe like $30 to cover half my groceries im just happy if it's going to a good home for your son.
