As far as I understand you can use them. There's nothing wrong with them.

But it'd be really annoying walking into a retail store and buying a device and it comes with an adapter wouldn't it? So to make things consumer friendly and easy anything that's bought here needs to have NZ/AU plug.

If you buy from overseas, no reason not to use an adapter - your choice.

I normally fix this issue with a pair of pliers.

Ahh, the good old bend it 45 Degrees :P

Just get the pliers out, and bend them to match a kiwi plug, you can fill the cracks with glue to make it safer. You can also try heating them slightly to make it easier.

#notAnElectrician but, it works...

Anything sold here has to have an NZ/AU plug fitted. It is not legal to just have an adapter included. Many of the adapters make it too easy to contact one or other of the plug pins with your finger tips as well as moving the weight of the device away from the mains socket.

Yeah, it's illegal to sell anything that doesn't have those silly insulated pins that are strategically weakened to break off at the drop of a hat.

Have you checked other adaptors around the house? You might have an unused or dead gadget that can donate it's power pack. 12 volts is a very common plug pack voltage. I have a lot of gadgets that all use 12v plug packs with compatible DC plugs (2x HDD, Battery Chargers x 2, LED light strip, speakers, scanner, DSL modem x2). I can't even remember which plug pack came with which device now, I just mix and match.

Recycle, reuse - don't waste money on a new plug pack if you don't need to.

It is critical that the voltage matches, but the current only needs to equal or exceed the factory supplied unit.

actually, there is plenty wrong with them.

Just cheap & nasty, actually dangerous. So loose & wobbly the cant support weight of even a small power pack (or even weight of the cable) &
will both adaptor & original plug will soon start to pull out : sparks, burn fire death :-)

Nothing like the solid adaptors from 10 years back, now just nasty & dangerous.

USB HD power packs, for major brands, are fairly universal in both plug size & polarity
At work, Ive often used Seagate power packs on WD's , & vice versa

I haven't seen one with pin ground for a very long time.
