Sure, sorry, thought you were after an AC card specifically. IMO with the $6 or so price difference it would have made sense to go AC.

With both antenna working on that N card on 5GHz  you ought to get around 100 - 140 mbps real throughput with a good signal. So will still be a large improvement over the current.

The '300mbps' is the negotiation speed between the AP and the Client. Wireless is half duplex, so  cut that speed in half. Then there are overheads, and then add in lower signal levels, interference etc, the actual speed you get is not likely to hit more than about 140mbps with everything perfect - that is also assuming you are on 5GHz running a 40MHz or wider channel.

I'm still relatively new to computers, wifi and whatnot. Think I've been overly focusing on the word 5G rather than overall improvement, but for $6, might as well make it even better. Makes sense. Might take your advice and do the shift up to AC.

You're bumping up your 'negotiation' speed (assuming both antenna are working, and your AP has at least 2x2 AC and 80MHz channel - basically any AC capable all-in one router/AP will be setup like this by default) from 300mbps to 867mbps, so if you do the maths, your real throughput speeds would go from somewhere around 40 - 45mbps with the current 1x1 2.4GHz card, to a bit over 100mbps with the 5GHz N, to around 400Mbps with the AC. Does make a big difference.

I would say with a good signal, general rule of thumb is you should see around 40 - 45% of your negotiation speed in real one-way throughput.
