No real requirement for the RAM as I have 8g DDR3 but if the mobo supports 16gb I'll take the RAM as well so you don't end up with orphan modules.

Cooler would be good :-)

I have used the fan off the other board as it fits and should be fine unless you are overclocking. will need to have new thermal paste applied.

Powered it up, its a 2500k and it got into bios with no issues.

if you want it flick me a PM

If you can make do with less obsolete video connectors with adapters, then the ex lease HPs that pop up everywhere would be more than good enough for you, and IME people have an over inflated worth of old hardware when it comes to putting together junker machines with used parts vs just getting an ex lease 5 year old HP.

Thats a good point.
Before forking out money, google the CPU to see how old it is.
A 8 year old CPU is basically worthless. (in value)
A 8 year old motherboard : just dont even bother . Its well past its reliable lifetime .
Recently had 2 i5 mb's fail at work, just too old .

Im in the same boat , my home PC AM3 motherboard is a bit flakey and needs replacing . AM3 boards on trademe are ridiculous prices for what they are  : ie just too old.
So rather than try buy a used 8 year old mb (that may be also be about to fail) , Ive decided I need to bite the bullet & start looking for a used Ryzen CPU &  NEW matching Motherboard .
gamers are often upgrading CPU's , so good recent era CPU's often show up on trademe.

I guess a 'ex lease' for around $150 (trademe) isnt too much to loose if it fails in 6 months , but that could be put towards new mb/ram (and used CPU)
Keep in mind , it will be old, and the non standard PSU's will either be unavailable or cost more than than PC .

This statement is a completely false.   The age of a CPU or motherboard alone is not in any way whatsoever a reflection of performance or usability - and particularly when it relates to Intel.

Please don't post such nonsense.

Also - AM3 is a CPU socket not a motherboard..
