That was the link I posted :)

Yeah, there's a reason it's free... I don't really want hardware RAID either. I was happy when it turned up in a secondhand server I wasn't expecting to have a RAID card, then less happy when I realised it wasn't useful.

What's the motherboard you have? Does moving the boot drive off SATA help - you can get NVMe to PCIe adapters for a few dollars if the board doesn't have an NVMe slot. The board may or may not be able to directly boot off them.

Second-hand fancier LGA1155 boards are probably not too hard to find either.

Arhhh yes, I've been up too late reading, I meant this one: https://wiki.unraid.net/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility#PCI_SATA_Controllers

Had to look up what 4Kn drives are😀, not going to be a problem for me for this system.

The board I have is out of a Dell OptiPlex 9010 Desktop, it only has 3 SATA ports unfortunately. I already have an SSD 2.5" drive for the OS that takes up one SATA port I like to use rather than buying SSD cards.

Might be better to look for another LGA1155 board with more ports than the hoops I'm going through at the moment. The Dell board also requires 5pin plugs on the fans, so I either need to find Dell CPU cooler and chassis fan or do modifications.

I naively thought I could get a reliable used 2-4 port SATA PCIe card for $20-$30 and be good to go. Have located an IBM H1110 on Ebay that uses the SAS2008 controller that would be about $50 with cables.

The aim was not to buy more hardware and use up what I had, I have a garage of old computers that aren't that useful any more and not really wanting to add to the pile. Maybe I should just keep the NAS system now I have it automatically turning off when not being used and can turn on via WakeOnlan when needed to keep the power use to a minimum, and have a separate garage workstation with the Dell board.

Thanks GZ for giving me a space to type out the problem to find options. I'll go spend a couple of hours on trademe looking for suitable LGA1155 motherboards as an option now🤨.
