I have a couple of switching mode power supplies for external HDD enclosures, they supply both 12v and 5v, both at around 2A. Unfortunately, I'm not looking to retire either of them right now, but I'd say this could be a cheap-ish option - external enclosures are pretty cheap (esp. second hand), probably cheaper than you could get a retail charger with those specs. HDD's need both voltage rails at relatively high currents, so I'd bet that most enclosures would come with a similar supply:

Just a found a heap of 5V 2A adaptors ina box in our store room... but no real identifying labels on them.
Stupid questions (TBH, I hate electricty :) ) :

How do you tell if the adaptor is AC or DC ?
Is it just by the polarity label ? Was told that if the positive was on the inside, then its defintely DC and AC is on the outside.....

Well, if you can see that they are 5V @ 2A but it doesn't explicitly say "AC" or "DC" then you might also be able to see either an AC or DC symbol. AC looks like a small sine wave, DC looks like a solid line over a dotted line (see my pic above). This mark is usually near where the voltage is listed.

Alternatively, since you're talking about polarity labels, if there's any polarity at all listed then it will be DC. For all intents and purposes AC has no polarity.

They're all 5V, 2A DC. The only issue would be polarity, i.e. +ve or -ve tip. Give them a go, they won't (shouldn't) break anything. Probably they'll be OK. The first and last ones are positive tip, check where they're going to see what that expects.
