harts: They reported to be a company which when googled was legitimate. So before sending the 4k through that a few colleagues and i had put together, i emailed the companies director. He quickly responded to say that this guy did not exist and to cancel all communications. The Director is taking it further and chasing the person using their details to scam people.

We were so very close to getting done here. I saw all your comments saying it seems too good to be true but all the ducks lined up... right until the end.

I'd like to think that as a group we could approach a manufacturer and get a bulk deal still somehow.

You aren't going to be able to negotiate enough units to beat the volume that distributors do and margins by distributors and retailers aren't that high. I would be surprised if it was worth it.

You'd be better contacting a retailer to negotiate a price, but wouldnt expect a huge saving.

Back in my Amiga Auckland days, we were lucky and somehow got offered the "new" CD32 units for $350 each direct from Commodore NZ. Retail on those was $800+ at the time. I bought a stack of them and sold them to mates. Never get those sort of offers anymore :(

But it wasn't $400 was it? The deal was bogus. Reality is it might be $60 cheaper.

It's a lot of risk for $60

Can't say I've heard all that much about Techworld before (which lists them at $560 and also doesn't list them as in stock but instead as a "special order") - From what I would consider reputable retailers they are currently going for ~$680(?) locally.. but yeah the $400 seemed too good to be true and I guess was. ;-)

Techworld have a pretty good reputation on pricespy. They seem to be able to get some items at much better prices and some manufacturers that we dont otherwise see here (MSI motherboards)

They are reasonably well thought of in gpforums etc as well. The issue is it's a return to manufacturer warranty on their stuff and they order weekly so it can be a delay in getting your product.
