Hi
I am looking at getting a GPSMAP 64st off Amazon rather than purchasing of a NZ supplier.
Is there any pitfall in doing this?
Thanks
Richard

Will you get NZ maps preloaded? From Amazon it will have US topo maps, here you get NZ maps.
Free NZ topo maps are available from NZOpenGPS, so it may be worthwhile importing. I think you can still import stuff under NZ$400 without paying tax.
Hi
I looked around a bit more and I can get one here in NZ for slightly better price.
So I will "Buy NZ" as they say.
Thanks
Richard
Hi
Actually it is only the GPSMAP 64 not the 64st but all I can
see is that is doesn't have the barometer.
I can live with that.
Thanks
Richard
the suffixes for NZ models denote lifetime maps and traffic
In that case it may be Satellite Traffic updates is the difference.
LMxx in garmins = lifetime maps
-S = 'live traffic'
And in the handhelds, it appears to be the difference is your years sub for sat imagery is paid for. But not in the basic one. And the altimeter and compass

Curious why you would bother with this device? Surely a suitable app on your phone will give you the same thing (or better) for a fraction of the price?
Hi
Probably more money than sense.:)
But I intend to retire to a block of land down south near Arthur's Pass.
Want to get in to some serious tramping and I doubt that the cell phone
coverage would be good enough.
But I might be wrong...don't know yet.
Thanks
Richard
You don't need cellphone coverage to use a phone as a GPS. There are apps which download maps onto the phone, which not only makes them usable outside coverage, but also saves on data usage (assuming you download the maps via WiFi).
OTOH, the only ones I've seen are good for driving or flying, not tramping. OTOOH, I haven't looked.
wooda2: I think your Garmin will last for tramping. Phone won't cut it.
Garmin GPS will run all day easily on a charge, try running your phone all day with the screen and GPS active, you will get a couple of hours tops and there arn't any USB outlets in the bush to charge it from, your GPS simply change out the batteries.
