PetAT: I have set my mind on the Garmin, most likely a 1350 or better. I gave up on TOMTOM since they come with a factory mount that us not removable.

Another black mark on the tom tom, is that the windscreen mount is reall flimsy and and easy to break when you remove it. It has this screw suction thing, and often when you unscrew it to release the suction the whole thing just falls apart. I did however like the tomtom interface, as it was easy to use, but most probably have similar interfaces now.

You can use it to Guide you to locations, handy if you are a courier or a truck driver or just want to go to locations without having to remember the roads of the top of your head? Its a GPS so Global Positioning Unit, not really sure what else to say really..

Ha, funny misinterpretation of my (not very clear) post.

I know what GPS is used for, the reason I asked specifically about what you want it for is to see whether its worth your while getting a standalone unit at all. Enthusiasts who want GPS units for marine use/geocaching etc etc might still need dedicated units, but most everyone else doesn't. In your case a smartphone would likely serve you perfectly well.

Came across the TOMTOM GO950 Live. completely flat, Doesn't have a built in mount which is good. Has voice command and optional remote I think. Worth it around $100?

I am a part time couriers driver, so GPS on left passenger side with window closed, Gotta jump of the truck for a min to deliver packages.

I definitely also recommend going with a Garmin.

Free map updates for life via http://nzopengps.org/ is a big bonus. Props to the people who do the updates over there.

Cheers, Probably going to get the Garmin 3790T or 3760T. Would have gone for TomTom but they charge for the Live Traffic Updates (although TomTom's have a more accurate "real time" traffic update compared to the Garmin's FM based one)

Anybody know if the Garmin Live Traffic GPS Updates work in New Zealand :/ ? If the Live Traffic Feature doesn't work then I might just get a Cheaper unit then the newer 3790T (from either TomTom or Garmin).

Really like the 3760, best price for new one seems to be $350 on trademe...

Would you consider selling yours to me? how much would you be looking for if you did? :o
