benz1: Do any dedicated GPS devises use Waze or Google Maps or are they just available as apps?

If you've got decent mobile coverage and a decent data plan, why wouldn't you simply use Waze?

I've been using Waze since 2009.

I prefer using a separate device and using my phone as a phone :-)

ubernoob: I have TomTom Go Live 2050 NZ Aussie version, there is also a "World" version
It is brilliant a diverts me different routes depending on the traffic, last night 3 times as the traffic changed due to the rain. Auckland southern motorway
Shows traffic build up and where the tail is back to within metres of the actual tail end.
Shows road works, road blocks etc

oops, should mention this model needs an annual subscription to Traffic. Map updates are free

As far as I'm aware the latest TomTom models don't require a subscription.

We don't usually drive where there's a need for live traffic. However we were in the States recently using Here (Nokia) Drive on our phones. The live traffic updates was very very good.

I find the Here Drive app on my Nokia to be as good as any other GPS system. I would never bother with a Navman or Tom Tom.

The Here app is now available for Android and iOS. I don't know how it compares with the native app on Nokia phone but I'd recommend trying it based on my experience with the native app. One big plus is other than the live updates you don't need to be online to use the app, all the maps are stored on the phone. You download the regions you want over WiFi. So far as I know the app is free and the maps are free.

I had a Navman... gave it to the in-laws and now just use google maps with traffic turned on.
Pretty damn accurate and works well with my pebble.

I find google maps great

I got a free 2D 200MB per month sim a while back, in an old phone as my GPS...works great.

After much review and deliberation I recently brought a Tom Tom Go 50. Aside from a couple of wee quirks, overall it is pretty good and easy to use. you get live traffic via a Bluetooth connection to your smartphone and you use your smartphones data plan. I have yet to have it divert me around a delay to save time, but it does show delays in the region live if I zoom out. and I am in the Kapiti area. I guess if I was travelling it would change my route or alert me to a delay, as I know they show up.
