rscole86: The law is quite clear on this matter;

Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Equipment 2004
2.5Televisions in motor vehicles
2.5(1)Except as provided in 2.5(2), any part of the image on a television screen fitted in a motor vehicle must not be visible to the driver of the motor vehicle from his or her normal driving position while the motor vehicle is in motion.
2.5(2)Subclause 2.5(1) does not apply if:
(a)the television screen is fitted in the motor vehicle only for the purpose of assisting the driver to reverse safely, by showing a clear picture of the area directly behind the motor vehicle; or
(b)the motor vehicle is a passenger service vehicle and the provisions of Land Transport Rule: Passenger Service Vehicles 1999 are complied with; or
(c)the screen ? is designed so that only information relating to the navigation, safe operation and control of the motor vehicle can be displayed on the screen while the motor vehicle is in motion; or
(d)the screen is only capable of displaying text and any change to the text on the screen is controlled manually by the driver.

The 2010 amendment removed a section, so that you are now allowed to have aftermarket screens.

If you break the law, you can expect a $150 infringement.

Interesting. There are screens that electronically fold away into a compartment so the law doesn't really clear this up.

See how it says 'reverse safely'. What about front mounted cameras?

I am still awaiting my response from the nzta.

These porshe's are available in New Zealand:

Check out picture number 17. It is a tv screen that plays dvd's. The dvd player itself is somewhere else so you load in the dvd there. But the tv screen does not fold in and I'm assuming it doesn't turn off when the handbrake is off because I'm assuming the screen can be used for other car features too like radio tuner.

Does anyone have or know someone with a car with a tv screen built into the dash?

It is very likely the computer in the Porshe will be configured to disable the screen when driving. You know those stupid warnings on sun visors, manufacturers can (in some countries) be held liable for anything so they need to add such limitations.

A couple in the US crashed a rental camper van while making tea, they thought cruise control means you don't have to drive it...

why i don't know, we haven't got that sort of tech installed yet, computer programing and hardware is capable of driving for you, right up to the point of not letting you hit anything?
look at all the lives that could be saved, its like there is a higher authority over seeing what can be introduced into public, maybe they are trying to slow the population down.
