Hi there fellow Geeks :)

Was having a nosey through slingshots website and noticed their unlimited broadband deals.
With my understanding I know your speed mostly relys on your location, wiring, distance from cabinet or exchange. The speed should be relatively the same with any ISP offering ADSL2+ .
[correct me if im wrong :) ]

So just wondering how people have been experiencing the speeds on slighshot's unlimited plan.

Unfortunately you're wrong.

The sync speed between your home and the ISAM port will be identical no matter what ISP you use. The speed will also be the same between your home and the Chorus/ISP handover point if both plans are using EUBA. From then on backhaul speeds can vary depending on whether the ISP is using Chorus tail extensions or buying their own transit.

Once you're in the ISP's network speeds beyond that will depend entirely on what upstream connectivity your ISP has.

If its speed you are looking for over data I would advise to stay away from Unlimited plans. As well documented on here, many users have found less than desirable speeds on the All You Can Eat Plan compared to regular capped ISP plans

1. VOIP

2. Gaming

3. Browsing

4. Streaming

5. Local traffic

6. File sharing, including Peer-to-Peer (P2P)

Customers also need to be aware of the following statement found on the Slingshot website.

It was designed for households which have many people sharing the same connection but only want to pay a fixed monthly price. However, customers on Broadband UNLIMITED should be aware that due to its users being more likely to maximise the bandwidth allocated to the plan the speeds they experience (limited as per our prioritisation rules described above) might be slower than those experienced by someone on one of our capped plans.

Very true, so far I have had no speed issues with my connection except on school holidays, but once they were over I was back to unnoticeable speeds,

I just signed up for slingshot naked dsl unlimited as we just got a new smart TV and the family wanted to watch HD Youtube ( a lot)
Unfortunately it cant play any video without constant buffering which is a bit of a let down. Our previous orcon account could.

Considering trying to see if I can cancel without getting stung fees

From what I can tell, it's kinda a mixed bag. You either get it good, or get it horrible. I've experienced nothing but steady fast speeds and no hiccups since switching to the unlimited plan in March, but a friend of mine had it so bad he had to go back to a capped plan.

Speed test from just now

Sometimes during the afternoon, online gaming can get slightly lagged but unless someone is heavily using our network at this time, the lag isn't bad enough to affect us at all.

I've been a slingshot customer for a couple of weeks now on the unlimited plan.
So far, so good -

My previous Telstra connection had me limited to ~1-2mbit most of the time. I'm now seeing average 12/1.0mbit from a range of speed tests. Stability has been reasonably good - do notice some brief loss during evenings at peak times.

My router (Draytek DV-120) achieves 14.0/1.2mbit line rate, so i'm fairly happy with achieved throughput - tested using a variety of speed test sites and tools.
streaming downloads such as 720p/1080p youtube clips has been fairly consistent, with only occasional buffering.

I'll try to conduct some more in-depth tests and post the results

It will be interesting to see how things go in the long-term. My Telstra connection was quite good when my area was cabinetized late last year, but throughput steadily degraded - i suspect over subscription in my area. I suspect that most ISP's have fairly tight bandwidth quota through each exchange.

I read about favourable slingshot unlimited experiences like the one above which is why i gave them ago. Unfortunately for me it just didnt work very well at peak times. I downloaded a bandwidth meter and monitored download speeds over several 24 hours periods. During the afternoons on a weekday it zipped along at 6mbps but unfortunately it slowed to about 1.8mbps during mid evenings and tonight being a cold monday the maximum i could get out of it was .60 mbps.

We have had to ban youtube viewing in our house during the evening as it hogs what limited bandwidth we can get and you can hear the kids shouting at each other from their bedrooms. Ironically it was them who asked for unlimited so they could watch as much youtube as they wanted.

The only explanation i can think of is that in my area which has a lot of rented accommodation there are many slingshot unlimited customers. My neighbour on Orcon genius gets 17mb max and his drops to about 8mbps at peak time.

Anyway slingshot plan is now being cancelled and were switching to the Orcon 1000gb plan. It costs $200 instead of $90 but in order to have a decent family internet service and not get stung overages thats what it costs in NZ i guess.

I used to be able to get about 1 megabyte per second over a single TCP connection from my VPS in Germany. Over the last few months something changed and now this is more like 2-300kbytes/s -- which is pretty poor.

I keep on hearing of much better speeds with other ISPs, even during peak times. I've never had another DSL ISP (used to be on TelstraClear cable but new house can't get it) so initially put this down to a DSL issue. But speeds within NZ are OK so it's not a DSL issue.

At this stage I'm unlikely to stay as a customer, and the last time I had speed issues (back on ordinary capped naked DSL) it took a month to get resolved.

Are the speeds I'm getting "normal"? Is traffic within the business day supposed to be that slow?

most people who quote fast speeds are doing many simultaneous connections at once.

also if transferring to your vps it should be fastest using http, followed by https, and worse for ftp/ssh.

germany speeds through any provider can be kind of ... though.

International speeds are often inconsistent and 300KB/s is quite standard.

As above, limiting the other connections that are active can help.
