I'm looking at what I'm currently paying for 2 numbers the wife and I have on vodafone compared to the $19 2 degrees prepay plan (which probably has very close to everything we need) and considering a switch. But can I port 2 on account 021 numbers to 2 degrees? And am I likely to have any problems if I do, e.g with receiving txts from overseas?

Yes and yes.

There are still isolated issues that occur with SMS and ported numbers, and resolving these isn't easy due to the way SMS (and porting) works.

You can migrate on account mobile numbers to prepay and keep the same mobile number on Vodafone

You can go on Supa prepay or Prepay Smart

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! Am I right in thinking that a while ago it wasn't possible to move an on account number to prepay?

Hmm, the prepay smart25 does look pretty good, but I really like the option to get the extra data (300MB) on the 2 degrees combo. We rarely use much voice or TXTs (well certainly not 2500) and both recently got cheap smartphones so it's all about the data :)

I have done exactly that almost 3 years ago now. My wife and I both had Vodafone mobiles and we ported our 021 numbers to 2degrees without any problems.

I have successfully sent and received TXT messages to/from:

- Canada
- USA
- UK

It does depend on the carrier that the other party is using in the respective countries, but 2D have a good reference page on their website to help with this:

Yes indeed. I had to wait several years until Vodafone enabled that to happen.

The option to move a number between postay to prepay and vice versa has been in place approx 4 years

Moving numbers between providers (number portability) and moving numbers between plan types on a provider are two differnet issues entirely.

The ability to move numbers between providers has existed since portability was introduced in NZ in 2007. For a year or so after that however Vodafone didn't have the ability to move numbers between their Prepay and On Account platforms.

All you need are 2 x 2degrees SIMs available from dairies, supermarkets, petrol stations to find your nearest check here - http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/storelocator.

Here's the details on how to port - http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/why-2degrees/bring-your-number.

Once you've got your SIM it's easy as this -

1. Pop the SIM in your Vodafone phone (it'll work on 2degrees)

2. Call 200 to activate the account, set a 4 digit security PIN (in case you need to call us we know it's you the account holder) and your Voicemail.

3. Go to Your 2degrees - https://secure.2degreesmobile.co.nz/web/ip/login - enter your details and click on the 'Bring Your Number' tab on the left.

4. You'll need the number that's printed on your 021 SIM if you're Prepay or account number on Post Pay.

Just follow the prompts and it takes about 2-3 hours for the number to come over. In that time you will be able to use both SIMs up to the point of porting, then the old SIM is deactivated.

As noted above there's info on texting from overseas. If you get any problems send me a PM.

Just remember to check the status of your on-account contract term.
If you still have some time left in that there could well be costs associated with changing plans and/or providers.

we are also planning to switch to 2D, quick question about data , does 2D have same 3G coverage as vodafone ? or is it only major cities ?

The 19combo data is national data so there is no additional charge for roaming on Vodafone.

Vodafone and 2degrees don't have matching coverage so there is no guarantee that if you have coverage on Vodafone you will also get coverage on 2degrees if you are within the 2degrees coverage "umbrella". When you are outside the "umbrella" you will roam on Vodafone so the coverage will be the same.
