Hi Everyone,

So I have been googling and read like mad over the last few days trying to figure out the settings to make my orcon VoIP work through my SPA122 so I can retain my modem and network setup that I already have.

I talked to Orcon and of course they have no interest in giving out the details of what should be in the settings to make it work, they just want you to use their modem.  Pretty poor really, all I wanted was an email containing settings that I could pull what I need from.

Obviously tones and the likes of that aren't an issue its the actual settings for making calls, best I've managed was get dial tone, dial number then either nothing till off hook tone or off hook tone straight away.

Anyone tried to setup something similar with the orcon stuff or am I in for a lot of trouble.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Use of other VoIP gateways/phones are not supported, so unless you can somehow obtain the login details for your account, you won't be able to make it work with another device.

Why not use the Genius?

Because I have a network setup already on my current modem/router which can handle fibre etc, and its alot of hassle to move all the settings over to that device. Also it only has 3 usable ports as one is reserved for fibre as opposed to mine that has a 5th port for that.

I have username and password its the other stuff behind it, yes its not supported as they choose not to give out any detail of the background settings which is silly really. 2talk and other companies at least give that detail out.

Why should you be forced to use that particular modem/router when other options are available.

Because it's an end-to-end product, a managed service, and that simplifies support; hence pricing can be kept competitive.  Not saying it's right or wrong just that's what it is, a black box (albeit a shiny one).

But they could happily supply the info so others can setup their own products.

Genius is a fully configured, fully end to end managed product. That's exactly why they don't make the settings available.

Just because something supports SIP doesn't mean it's fully compatible. There are often major significant differences between softswitches required to ensure devices work fully, and more importantly maintain Telepermit compliance.

If you want to use your own hardware go with a provider that allows a BYOD model.

Perhaps they could, but probably not happily. They've chosen a model where they control everything from end to end. By not having to hand out details or provide support to anything other than their own hardware means the cost is predictable and kept low. Rightly or wrongly, it's the business model they have chosen.
