Hi guys, I know this has purposely been changed, but I thought asking is worth a shot.

Not too long ago before our modem drama started, we used to get approx 1.2-1.5mbps via bittorent and sites like Mediafire etc. This was with the ACYE plan. Now, we have replaced our ADSL modem which as far as I am aware hasn't been causing any problems. The old one used to time out heaps, and get high latency.

Now with our new modem, the web performance is better overall, but I've noted that my downloading is the slowest I've seen it in a long time. I'm not a heavy downloader as I once was, but on the occasions where it's urgently needed my downloading speed is the slowest I've seen in a long time, compared to what it was at one stage.

For Example, I need to use Mediafire to get a file I urgently need, and Mediafire used to download at approx 1.2mbps, has now been so severely slowed down, it's now not even going at 100kbps. There's times where I have seen it creep up to about 180kbps, but never past there.

Any chance that someone can tell me what's wrong, or if Slingshot has just reached over capacity with this plan again, therefore resulting in them shaping all of us over the top?

Hi Paul,

I'm not so sure it is a problem with over-capacity. Slingshot recently just added more bandwidth to the pool for unlimited users and continues to scale it as more users sign on. I know what you mean when you say it could be fantastic one moment and slow the next, I myself has experienced this. In the past week, I've found that it has actually been better than usual especially for P2P based stuff.

have you noticed your slow-downs are based on how damp it is outside or if it is raining? I had this issue at one point.

When you find it is going slower than you would expect, I'd suggest using the Slingshot speed test at speedtest.slingshot.co.nz or even try a local server at speedtest.net for comparison. Compare international/national traffic and size that up to what you are getting in P2P based apps to see if it is your line itself or the prioritization at work.

I can't really suggest anything else apart from the standard isolation testing, however I'm not sure it will do you much good.

Hi,

What sort of modem did you get? Some modems deal with P2P differently and I have seen this affect peoples connections before, not common though.

Due to the nature of P2P it is hard to place issues with it due to speed being largely affected by seeds...saying this, I will always troubleshoot speed complaints.

You can PM me here with more info such as;

- Account number.
- Tracert to site in question plus any other local or international sites you have issues with.
- Speed test results to speedtest.slingshot.co.nz and any other speed test sites you use.

Following this I will be able to provide a more accurate answer.

First things first - you have been very consistent with the units, which is good, but do you really mean your previous speeds were about 150 Kilobytes/sec to 190Kilobytes/sec? And that now it's more like 12 Kilobytes/sec to 22 Kilobytes/sec?

Or previously were you about to achieve (presumably) near your ADSL line rate of about 12 Mebabits/sec?

I am experiencing the same in the nearby suburb of te atatu peninsula.

Roughly 3:30pm to 1:00am Mon-Fri my max *actual* download speed over HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and RDP is around 100-180 Kilobytes per second
Roughly all day and night on Sat-Sun I am also experiencing the above at around 100-180 Kilobytes per second

1:01am to 3:29pm Mon-Fri I get 1900 Kilobytes per second (1.9 Megabytes per second)

This has been going on for the past two months, before that I was at a constant speed of 1.9 Megabytes per second

Other people on Slingshot AYCE in the area experience the same or similar experience from what I have seen.

My speedtest.net results in 14 Megabits Down / 850 Kilobits Up 24/7

Very unimpressed, since I am at university most days that I can download at a decent rate and I was told slingshot doesn't throttle AYCE, and there is nothing clear on the site about it apart from de-prioritizing Peer2Peer downloading, which I *never* use.

But seriously 1900KB/s down to 100-180KB/s... thats a 90% drop.

These speeds are between me and my Australian servers, United states servers and various cloud storage hosts and also microsoft downloads + skydrive downloads. During the drop I cant stream 720p/1080p content on sites like youtube either, stuck with SD. Idk what's been happening but I had a better experience on ADSL@8mbits(v1) vs ADSL2+ over Slingshot AYCE.

The timing of the speed drops and the consistency of the dropped speed rates leads me to conclude this is a purposeful limitation implemented by slingshot, or am I missing something/is there something that can be done?
