I am moving in a couple of weeks and considering changing ISP to snap (don't like the new telecom plans as to get what I have today I will have to pay more).

Snap seem to get good reviews but was interested to know if I can do their VOIP line rather than a "physical" line with only there ADSL2 offering (Not in VDSL or UFB areas).

Does anybody know how long ago snap refreshed their plans? Comparing to Vodafone & telecom they are slightly more expensive however I am pretty keen on the modem they supply and moving to VOIP.

No harm in calling to ask the question. I imagine the only reason why voip isn't offered with adsl is for the slow upload speeds.

As far as im concerned You pay for what you get with snap, even in Invercargill I get 1.1MB/s on well hosted content, the Unmetered youtube for $5 is a life saver, we practically halved our data usage a month.
ive heard complaints about the frequency of datashaping on both telecom and Vodafone and have never had any similar issues with snap. All of them have been local terrible line issues like rain causing packet loss and the like.

Might call them to see if you can add a Snap Plus (VOIP) phone line to that ADSL line only plan. Otherwise I guess just use 2Talk.

Should I be concerned about running a voip line over ADSL2? will the upload speeds really impact me that much?

With the Fritz box, could I plug in my house alarm into the analog telephones port? (anybody ever done this?)

Nope doesn't look like you're the first one to think of this. I doubt the Fritzbox would be any better but I guess might be worth trying! Maybe I'll try it some time...

The only issues I had using VoIP on ADSL/ADSL2+ was when I had a bad line. SNAP helped me heaps to get the line into a usable condition. Depending on which codecs you use, there wont be any problems. There've been times when I've hit my data cap so restricted to slow speeds and VoIP calls still sounded the same.

So as long as your current ADSL line stats are good you shouldn't have any problems.

Snap dont do naked ADSL plans with voip, only on VDSL. but you can take the broadband plan with home phone and replace the phone line with voip and pay $105 for 150Gb and get caller id , call waiting and answer phone for that price, you have to ask them though. i did it because i didnt want to pay for the reconnection of a phone line after switching back from VDSL and voip.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Alarms won't work over VoIP*. Period. If you want to use an alarm and don't have a POTS line move to IP monitoring. If you alarm company doesn't do IP monitoring move to one that has moved on from the 1980's and cleap monitoring kit to somebody who does.

*They might, but a 99% solution isn't good enough for me.
