Interested to know your thoughts on Flip doing a 100GB data pack/block.

It wouldn't expire for 12 months like the other ones.

- What price do you think is reasonable for it?

- Would it make you switch to us?

- If not, what's stopping you specifically?

Well since you 're point of differentation is price, and you put yourself as cheap broadband it would naturally have to be cheaper (quite a lot cheaper) than any other provider out there.

For $99 you can get unlimited data with Orcon or 150GB on Telecom, Slingshot (your parent) do 100GB (with rollover) for $92.

So that sets the maximum price you can charge for 100GB at about $90 total.
Since you already charge $50 for the landline then the 100GB bolt-on can?t be more than $40, and really should be quite a lot less. I?d say you would need to charge $30 at the absolute most. Anything more than that and you can?t really continue justifying your existence as a ?super cheap? broadband provider.

(and no it woudn't make me switch to you. I use a lot more than 100GB every month.)

Was thinking around that price point...maybe $35 though. That's still cheap and also fits with our other data packs.

Telecom does home line plus 500GB for $120. Which is about $4/GB including home line. From what I heard lately since most Telecom customers are older people there isn't a lot of traffic shaping/prioritisation going on for them if you are planning on downloading a bit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm in the hunt for a reliable ISP who doesn't reduce my speeds because I watch a lot of HDTV and usenet stuff. No p2p. Just usenet.

We don't shape anything, and have a brand new network - speeds are good.

That sounds good, but being on Slingshot and getting speeds like 100 to 200Kb/s most times of the day and up to 1.3mb/s once in a while at like 3AM(yes mb/s not mbits) on a 250gb plan, would the speeds be comparable or better? I live very close to the "exchange BOX" according to a cust rep and should be getting pretty good speeds.

I made the big jump from Telstraclear to Slingshot, telstra was a solid 2MB/s which was awesome but I could only get 150gb with them at a premium price.

Just heard that Snap does $120 for 120GB and free unlimited data between 1am and 7am and this is not shaped at all.

My distance from a cabinet is around 300 metres. Testing on a newish Windows 7 laptop via wireless distance from modem to laptop is 5 metres.

Firstly, NEVER do speed testing via wireless. Your results will be meaningless. They should always be done via a wired Ethernet connection.

Also do you really mean 1.3mb/s? Perhaps you mean Mb/s or MB/s but you need to clarify so we know what sort of throughput you mean - there are orders of magnitude in difference.

My opinion on the 100GB data pack:

Price: I'm thinking $30 ($35 if you make the Phone Features FREE for anyone with a current 100GB pack)

Validity for 12 months would obviously be a must.

I'm already a customer of Flip but what would keep me here:

I would really like to see a full range of Phone Features available as Slingshot do at no extra cost. And obviously the 100GB data pack becoming available ASAP.

Hmmm sorry i tend to disagree in some ways, in the same room with a distance of less than 5 metres, with modern equipment it makes little difference on the actual speed. If you compare my above speedtest (wireless) to the one below (wired ethernet) the results are not greatly different unless that latency difference makes a huge difference for your personal requirements.

Just been told 'ANY DOWNLOADS' except streaming is treated same way as a p2p user. Just joined unlimited internet with slingshot, was getting decent speeds until I had a casual chat with the helpdesk dude about prioritisation of users etc. could be a co incidence but ever since then my downloads have been averaging 500 KB/s. Not very pleased.

So Flip, are you saying that if my usage is around 500gb a month, which I am very happy to pay for, my household and my internet account will not be put with the heavy user and my speeds will be drastically reduced? Like what slingshot is doing?

Can't comment on what Slingshot is doing but we don't move people around based on their usage.

There is one pool for all our customers and if we start run out of capacity (unlikely for a while) we buy more bandwidth.

I do have to say though - we don't have the 100GB data block yet. And if you're doing 500GB a month Flip might be more on the expensive side of things...
