And the best offer is from Skinny Mobile (Telecom) who offer this:
Skinny pricing. The best way to live Skinny is to roll with one of our $4 a week Combos*.
You get 60 mins calling to any NZ network, 60 MBs of data and 100 texts each week!
Not to mention that because it's summer you get:
FREE Skinny to Skinny calling and Skinny to Skinny MMS+ 44 MB data EXTRA each week with any active $4 a week combo
(Fair use policy applies. Ends March 31 2013).

Ive always been a 2degrees man, but these offers are hard to beat.
Time for 2degrees to show some initiative and make better counter offers which could include carrying data etc over to the next month.
Unfortunately, they seem to have dropped the ball in the last six months. Their phone support response has been abysmal and they’ve forgotten most of their customer base is there because of their earlier competitiveness.

Time for 2degrees to pull its socks up IMHO.
Al.

1GB on VF is getting there, Telecom not so much. Data is my main decision point, I need 1.5GB to 2GB per month.

That's about the same as me - I have 1.5GB of plan data but sometimes go over that. I stream a lot of music and share data with my iPad too.

Yes, the $19 pack is what I currently use. But what I am getting at is 2degrees in the past were competitive leaders by a country mile. To keep that lead, they need to rethink their offers IMHO. Skinny lets you buy any amount of credit - 2degrees forces >=$20 each time, which is no good if you are an unpaid student for example. For me, I'd be happy with a carry-over of left overs. I think this closure at end of month by Telecos is a jolly wrought.
Cheers,
Al.

The real surprise to me is how long it has taken Telecom and Vodafone to aggressively respond to the competition provided by 2degrees. Telecom has been really aggressive since the split with chorus with respect to mobile (the $19 prepay and open smartphone postpay plans) and fixed (adsl) broadband plans.

We've just moved over 3 phones from Vodafone to 2Degrees and will save about $70 a month so I think their plans are great. :)

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I guess it's a balancing act for any carrier to offer a one size fits all approach to the mobile consumer.

Q1 2013 is going to be very interesting; 2d is expected to respond.

Oh my, this is what real competition (not duopoly "competition") looks like, isnt it exciting!

Even if 2degrees aren't leading the pack at present, they deserve so much kudos for kickstarting competition in the mobile space

I think we need to congratulate 2degrees on changing the Mobile landscape in general. There is no way we would be seeing these aggressive pricing changes by Telecom/Vodafone without 2degrees forcing them out of their cosy duopoly.

As I was reading through the thread I was thinking exactly the same as these comments. However, things tend to shake out over time and it'll be interesting to see how this competition goes long term. Rightly or wrongly I tend to look at electricity companies as a clear example of where "competition" isn't exactly doing much.

Definitely.

Hopefully, Q1 2013 will see more initiative from 2degrees.

OFFTOPIC this week I was helping a lady friend with her adsl broadband problems.  I figured her ADSL Dynalink modem was dead, and ended up having to use a Vodafone 3g modem (looks like a credit card). We had no password as her husband had recently died, and taken the password with him, so I phoned up Vodafone support for assistance. Over half hour was spent with a chap who didnt have a clue what the modem was and asking inane questions such as road address and so on. In the end I gave up.
Later I sorted the password by removed modem back and there was a code which my deceased friend had not changed. Tested by logging into free Vodafone website. That working, phoned Vodafone again; fortunately a Kiwi who understood what their product was, helped somewhat more by activating the beast for $20 + $10 for some bandwidth.
Moral of this story - 2degrees support may be slow in response, but they have always been able to sort out an issue. Contrary, Vodafone over the years with my young family we have found them to be often the worst support you could possibly imagine, and if something goes wrong, its almost always the customer at fault, not Vodafone.

Regards,
Al.
