Hi,

I have just recently moved to SNAP. Now that the connection is working I wanted to transfer my domain. However I called your service desk and was notified that you don't offer IMAP you only do POP.

I have a iPhone and laptop and desktop and I travel a lot so if my phone is out of battery etc I can get on webmail & having my emails synced it important.

I have this with Orcon at the moment. I wanted to bring it across so I just pay 1 bill for my internet / email services.

Is there any plan for this is the future?

The reply the CSR gave me was that you prefer POP over IMAP, which in this day and age with so much technology I would have thought people would push IMAP then POP. So much devices out there syncing is key. I guess you do save on server space etc if you POP it down but lacks functionality IMHO.

<insert generic "stop using ISP email" post here> Laughing

Seriously though, if you're new to Snap then can't you just continue using your previous email service? Do you really want to provide people with an address that may change next time you switch ISP?

You know you keep your Orcon email for life, right?  Unless it's a domain account or something special you don't need to pay anything to keep it.  Or, y'know, Gmail.

Cut your losses and forget about ISP email services.

Move to hosted solution using ActiveSync. It's a gazillion times better than IMAP.

Any recommendation? Did a quick google and found http://www.openhost.co.nz/

Looks pretty cheap.

Yea, it's not free any more, even if you use just 1 user. Only $5 a month per user though.

Hi Oriphix,

IMAP is on the roadmap to be implemented soon for all customers, however at the moment we can enable it on a per customer request - once you have transferred your domain we will enable IMAP on your account.

Thanks,
TheRalph

Windows Live Domain is free, it's a Windows account, access through Outlook.com, Skydrive, etc, etc.

Or Office 365 which is pretty cheap for individual Exchange mailboxes only.

Call me old-fashioned, but ISP mail is nicer in one way - generally, your data is not being analysed for marketing/other purposes.

It's probably also stored closer to you, latency wise.

In terms of free service however, compared to say, Gmail, or Windows Live Mail, it will be:

- Potentially less secure (private servers easier to compromise, versus a big target - security argument)
- Have less storage (almost certainly)
- Less accessible (inferior webmail/synchronisation facilities)
- Possibly 'spammier' (although most quality ISPs will run mail filtering appliances)
- The mail system will be less resilient (how many times has Telecom mail failed, versus say, Windows Live mail)

“I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success... Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.” - Nikola Tesla

Telecom's email is hosted by Yahoo!

Latency is really not that a big deal. It's not like people are sending 100 MB files over email these days. Synchronisation only takes a few seconds even for large mailboxes.

maybe not 100mb, but lots of people send 10mb files these days.  photos off cameras etc are 2 or 3mb each often, so send 5 and you're already hitting 10mb+.

sure it'll suck for upload speed on adsl, but as connection speeds go up there'll be a bigger difference between local/remote mail.

that said latency for email delivery is pretty good these days, i can bounce an email to gmail and have it in a few seconds often.  i find myself using gmail as a repository for things i want on my phone etc these days.

i myself very much dislike the idea of storing email offshore.  years ago there was a "by nz made" that got replaced by "made in china" but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of campaigns about keeping local to nz...

I upload lots of data incl photos and files to SkyDrive every day pretty much. It's quick!

Do whatever you want to do man.

One thing I find with ISP hosted email, is that often their IPs will often get blacklisted in RBLs, and ISPs can be very slow to fix this.

Yeah I had a epiphany & decided to leave the domain with Orcon.

As the saying goes if its not broke don't fix it!

Its only $3.50 a month I'm paying so I will just throw in $50 and forget about it for a year or something not worth the hassle to move and setup / change all the settings in the devices.

Thanks for responses :)
