Hi all,

Anyone using naked VDSL on Snap?
I've heard from some ISPs that a splitter is mandatory for a VDSL installation. Is this the case even if you go naked without requiring a phone line?

Regards,
John

I am. When the Chorus tech came to do the install he said the splitter was required even if there isn't going to be a phone service on the line.
The install is now free, so you'd may as well use it for the splitter + dedicated VDSL jack.

Thanks, yeah problem is I live in an apartment, so running cabling is going to be very troublesome.
Guess we'd just have to dedicate one of the jack points for VDSL.

Naked DSL doesn't remove the need for a master filter if you have multiple jackpoints.

IMHO a master filter should be mandatory for all ADSL2+ and VDSL2 installs - the only scenario where it's not needed is when your incoming line terminates on a single jackpoint.

Hi JOhna8

A splitter (or an order for wiring straight to the demarc for naked VDSL2) is not mandatory for a VDSL2 line with us, but its highly recommended, and we do not charge for the install so in almost all cases we would recommend you take this.

The only reason you might not require this is if you have recently only had wiring completed, if you wish to use a 3rd party to complete your wiring, or if you work for Chorus and can do your own wiring (yes this happens:)

One thing that we are very proactive on is monitoring our VDSL2 customers which we have done from day 1, and if you do have an issue on your line, even after wiring we will require that this is checked which may involve a Chorus visit (we will call you and arrange this). we have actually had this happen on a number of existing lines that have had a full Chorus wiring install as well, and we do this to both ensure that you get a great service and to also ensure that it does not affect the lines for other people in the same area. sometimes this is a matter of someone moving their router, internal wiring degradation or just some other reason, but we generally pickup issues automatically and quickly. So in general although we have allowed connection only orders on our line we have a very low rate of VDSL2 lines running below their anticipated performance rates and we work with customers to ensure that VDSL2 lines with performance issues are corrected.

If you opt for a connection only (if you fall into one of the options above) we will monitor your line very closely, if it does require wiring fixes we can dispatch Chorus to remedy this reasonably quickly, in saying this we have many VDSL2 lines that have been connection only lines running at 10/70Mbps today. (Very close to the ISAM)

Thanks,
TheRalph

Interesting comments here - I've just switched to VDSL from ADSL (with snap) and although I advised a splitter and cat cabling was already installed, I was told I needed to be home and that chorus would call anyway to check that it was all OK before turning on VDSL. Sounded fine to me to get a free line check, no problem.

However VDSL was enabled around lunchtime with no contact at all from chorus. If I'd taken time off work or something like that I would have been......miffed. Luckily not the case. I'm kinda curious if snap still get billed by chorus in these circumstances!

I know someone else who got naked VDSL with Snap recently. When the Chorus tech came to install it he apparently didn't do anything at the house.
They were told by the tech that since there was already as splitter there (an old ADSL one) a new one wasn't needed.
He ended up running cat6 to to the modem from the demarc himself.

I do live in an apartment - if there is a requirement for a splitter I'm fine with that. Just provisioning another jackpoint is going to be an issue.
Can he simply reuse one of my jackpoints which is preconfigured with a BT plug? I know the Fritz modem has a RJ45 lead, so guessing typically Chorus provisions a RJ45 port for VDSL only?

Actually he can actually change the whole faceplate/port if required to a RJ45 one.
