Hi,

I just got an email from Slingshot saying i'll be upgrading to the "better network"; is thus just LLU?

My current sync stats are
Downstream Rate: 15045 kbps
Upstream Rate: 1015 kbps

Will the download sync get better? I'm happy with how it is at the moment so just asking out of curiosity :)

Cheers,
Tom

Hah likely not, where are you based?

I think it will improve a little bit, maybe 1-2meg higher download (LLU uses a lower noise margin than wholesale gear). Cool thing is that you can use Annex M, which enables an upload of up to 2meg, which can come in handy

It depends if the OP is connected to a cabinet or the exchange, if they're connected to the exchange the changes could potentially help out, if connected to a cabinet they normally bypass the cabinet to go to the exchange which can degrade performance.

Good point - I forgot their better network upgrade could just be a phone service change (free smartphone features iirc)

Surely they wouldn't migrate him onto ULL if he's on a cabinet tho?

It would save them some cash, so perhaps they would.  Someone from Slingshot would have to confirm their policy on this, as it'd hurt sync rates more than likely.

The cabinet isn't bypassed.  Cabinet is still used for broadband, which means the Chorus SNR is there to stay but phone is passed through to the exchange.  LLU might give the OP a better sync rate if passed through the exchange, but reliability may degrade.  I'd be more concerned about the Chorus tech jumping the port incorrectly.  Anyone want to put money on it this time?

If Joker comes home to no DSL one afternoon, he will know why.  If it happens.  Contact Slingshot immediately so they don't have to open a new fault to fix it.  It takes longer otherwise.

Good luck!

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Does anyone know how I can find out which cabinet I'm on?

Also, the reply above has got me pretty worried as i'm on the slingshot unlimited naked plan so if my internet does go out I won't be able to ring up :/

Call from a cell phone if needed.

David's on the money. If you've been cabinetised we'd leave the broadband at the cabinet and just change up the phone line. Seeing as you're on a NDSL plan this should mean that you're not cabintised (unless we've got some wrong info about your connection).

Hi, yup you're sync speed likely will go up a little, mine went from 12Mb to 14Mb when i switched to llu naked at my old address.

annex m will change your upload as well, but you'll sacrifice some download for it. where i am now i gained half a Mb up (~1000kb to ~1500kb) but probably lost 1-2Mb down (~11Mb to ~9.5Mb).

Your mileage may vary though :)

Does this indicate that NDSL is no longer wholesale-only?

Seconded - last I checked there was no way to get LLU/BN on NDSL. Quite pleased to see this email as I've been wanting to try out Annex M but didn't really want to pay for phone features I don't need.

Kind of. We haven't released it as a retail product yet. There have been a handful of people where we've migrated them to Better Network NDSL but we're still working on releasing it to the rest :)

Ok just to clarify, what should I expect to change (if anything at all) once I am moved onto this better network?
